I would put the @aldotcom breaking news team up against any other, any day and 2025 is no different. @RobinsonCarol, @HeatherSGann, @MikeCasonAL, @billineastala, @HowardKoplowitz, and @Pj_Darrington were on top of the biggest news in Alabama. 🧵
Had never even heard of the place until the Michelin thing. Now it's all I think about.

I spoke with @JMilesColeman a few days ago about the AL2 race and the efforts of Black Democrats threatened by redistricting.
“Something is going on in the South this year,” he told me.
Sabato's Crystal Ball now has #AL2 between @repscfigures and @RhettforAlabama as a "toss up." This is according to a release sent out today, and one week before the Nov. 3 election. District was redrawn by AL Legislature in the spring to give Republicans the advantage.

New from me:
Alabama Democrats are mobilizing to keep one of the country’s few Southern, Black Democrats in Congress.
U.S. Rep. Shomari Figures is one of several Black Democrats in Congress endangered by redistricting, as Republicans in different states redraw lines and try to shore up their majority in Washington, D.C.
Figures is criss crossing his new district, trying to appeal to old supporters and find new ones.
“They tried to make this district one that we cannot win,” Figures said Thursday night at a rally in Montgomery, the largest city in District 2.

OTD in 1970, Baptist Press reported that eleven staff members of First Baptist Church in Birmingham, Alabama, had resigned following a controversy over racial discrimination.
The dispute began when Winifred Bryant and her 11-year-old daughter, Twila, who had participated in the church's neighborhood tutoring ministry, sought membership in the all-white congregation. After two months of controversy, the church voted to deny their membership.
Pastor Herbert Gilmore and youth director Betty Bock announced their resignations, declaring they would not serve a “racist church.” Nine additional staff members subsequently resigned in support.
The controversy deeply divided the congregation. An earlier attempt to dismiss church ministers had failed by just four votes, 237–241. Following the membership decision, approximately 300 members walked out in protest, calling themselves the “Company of the Committed.”
The protesting members pledged their financial support to the departing staff and began discussing the possibility of forming a new church.
Associate pastor John Sims explained that the disagreement was not simply about church programs or differing opinions, but concerned the church's understanding of and commitment to “Christ, his church and his gospel.”
The October 22, 1970, Baptist Press report provides a remarkable look at the struggle over racial discrimination within Southern Baptist churches.

Alabama Republicans thought AL-2, a former opportunity district they redistricted in 2026, would be a lock.
In south Alabama, though, the race is closer than many expected.
I talked with some local GOP voters and candidates—
