Narrator: There was in fact, a wolf.
A growing number of people are wondering if Anthropic is the AI industry’s “boy who cried wolf.” If Mythos-related threats don’t materialize, the company will have a serious credibility problem.

Instead we see noted infosec people saying stuff like “we’ve had worms for ages” because pooh-poohing AI is fashionable and a good way to cope. Well no shit, of course we’ve had worms. But we’ve never had worms that can intelligently choose targets and self-modify. 2/

If I was Prime Minister and a £1.5bn 🇬🇧 submarine was kitted out and launched, I'd probably make a big deal out of it. But zero mention anywhere from our Andy his government. Barely even a press article, nothing on the BBC...the only news org I could see writing about it is GB News. No talk of the feat of British engineering that it is, built by thousands of talented workers at 🇬🇧 BAe's Barrow-in-Furness shipyard, powered by a 🇬🇧 Rolls Royce nuclear reactor built in Derby which won't need refuelled for its entire service life, equipped with 🇬🇧 Spearhawk heavyweight torpedos and 🇬🇧 British defence engineering firm Babcock providing support for the launch and control systems. A wider network of over 1000 🇬🇧 companies supplying sonar, comms, combat systems and other specialist components. Based in 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 which will mean important skilled jobs for the nation (topical given recent independence chatter picking up). A 🇬🇧 submarine designed for intelligence, strike capabilities and maritime security roles that will allow Britain to protect and project its interests around the world into the 2050s (topical given recent Argentine threats over the Falklands). Instead, our newsflow is just an endless dreary stream of tax rises, increased benefits for the unproductive, and dinghies crossing the Channel. How depressing. 🙈 Make Britain Great Again! 🇬🇧
🇬🇧 RULE, BRITANNIA! HMS Agamemnon, the world's most advanced attack submarine, has sailed from BAE Systems' Barrow-in-Furness shipyard for the first time and is heading for her new home at HM Naval Base Clyde. The departure marks the first in a series of sea trials and training evolutions before she can join her five Astute-class sisters in the operational fleet. Named after the ancient Greek king who launched the Trojan War, the nuclear-powered powered boat - the sixth of seven Astute-class submarines being built - weighs in at 7,400 tonnes and is 97-metres long.

There are so many seasoned software executives who are completely out of their element with the types of products that will breakout in the next few years. Over the last 20 years, their brains were wired to build apps that deliver value by outputting deterministic results, but AI produces value from probabilistic results. This is such a different way to approach how something should work. Young people who are thinking in this way from the outset will be at a significant advantage -- in the same way they were advantaged when thinking about how products could be social in 2010.

As a matter of actual history though: The Stochastical Parrots paper was used to push a dogma of "LLMs are a hype/fraud." NOT to propose an analytical framework, NOT to search for solutions. I attended the workshop that I believe @mmitchell_ai, @timnitGebru and others organized two years on ("Stochastic Parrots Day" 2023). In my memory it was quite dogmatic and almost entirely focussed on the "don't believe hype" narrative. I was not the only one who left with the impression "this can't be the line for AI ethics." We had the feeling "this won't age well" in 2023.
This post has stayed with me bc I'm an author on the paper, and have worked on solutions for years -- because recognizing that LLMs are stochastic parroters is super helpful for pinpointing solutions. Here's a thread on solutions! 🧵

"stochastic parrot" was a mimetically-fit cognitive virus that spread from 2021-2025; it temporarily blinded many gifted people to the nature of AI progress, burning up crucial years in which they could have helped think through the response to the situation.

I still remember old internet debates about AI where half the responses would be things like “this argument fails because no one would be crazy enough to connect the AI to the internet” and “why would they let it do its own experiments lul”
Neon is very cool work, it amounts to giving superintelligence an interface into the real world to create and research new … nanomaterials … 😅

People really have zero idea what anyone in AI safety believes and just make things up on the spot. I've always been pro nuclear power and have never been a "climate doomer" and this applies to most people worried about AI risk.
The nuclear power doomers became the climate doomers and now they’re the AI doomers. The only commonality is they want the United States to recede.

Underrated fact that three out of three of the most cited AI researchers of all time have all been very vocal about existential risk from AI. Are they part of the IPO marketing scheme too?
I wish more people understood this. There's still this narrative out there that "AI might kill us all" is a niche view. It's actually a view that's been around for decades, and is shared by the most-cited AI scientists of all time, as well as a majority of surveyed AI researchers.
