As news of the Marburg cases in Rwanda spreads, I want to share some thoughts on where the outbreak stands, what will likely come next, and why this outbreak may (hopefully) end up being unlike other viral hemorrhagic fever outbreaks in the past 🧵
Today Rwanda announced cases of Marburg virus, a viral hemorrhagic fever similar to Ebola. Rwanda has a strong health system with great leadership, and all indications are they are on top of this. The international community must offer support—not stigma—to aid in the response.

There is much discussion among scientists on heavily mutated Omicron sequences (n=3) from Israel and Denmark. It is important to note that this new clade (in discussion if BA.2 mutated or a new BA.6 lineage) has lost one of qPCR markers due to 69-70 deletion in Spike (common in Alpha, Omicron BA.1, BA.5, etc). In the current circulating lineages (XBB.1.5, EG.5, etc) this deletion do not exist allowing to track this new mutated linages with qPCR - See our previous paper in Science highlighting how qPCR can help to track variants - science.org/doi/10.1126/scie…
