I am pleased to see Gov. Newsom’s courageous decision to commute the sentences of California’s death-row inmates. The death penalty isn’t aligned with California’s values, and I support its abolition at the federal level as well provided those who are facing execution will still spend the rest of their lives behind bars.
Breaking news: California Gov. Gavin Newsom announced Thursday that he will commute the death sentences of all 548 of the state’s condemned inmates to life without parole. sfchronicle.com/politics/art…

Trump screamed at Susie Wiles and banished her from the Oval Office. As the door slammed, he was still yelling: The 72 hours that destroyed the president's beloved chief of staff... and her Camp David plot to deceive him trib.al/kEWXkNE

I spent two years working with Stephen Miller.
His appointment as White House chief of staff is among the most dangerous personnel decisions in the history of our republic.
I say that without reservation.

"I don’t want Jared Kushner to be investigated because he’s the president’s son-in-law. I want him investigated because he’s potentially laundered and embezzled $2 billion dollars in funds from the governments of Saudi Arabia and the UAE. I don’t want Stephen Miller investigated because he’s a racist ghoul who’s at the center of the Trump brain trust. I want him investigated because he’s a racist ghoul who has violated the due-process rights of millions of people and, potentially, directly violated court orders. I don’t want Pete Hegseth investigated because he’s a toxic psychopath who is unqualified to lead America’s military forces. I want him investigated because he’s a fucking murderer who needs to spend the rest of his life in jail, either in this country or The Hague." thenation.com/article/politi…

Trump: "I am pleased to announce that Mr. Stephen Miller, the current Deputy Chief of Staff of the Trump Administration, and one of my most trusted advisors, will become the Chief of Staff starting Monday, November 9, 2026. Susie Wiles, who has done an outstanding job, will be moving over to the Trump Political Operation. I want to thank her for her service as Chief of Staff — She has done a great job! Profound appreciation to Governor Gavin Newsom who courageously commuted the sentences of all 548 prisoners on death row in California.
My father was murdered in California and when his assailant was sentenced to death, his brother, Senator Edward Kennedy, on behalf of our family, asked that the murderer's life be spared. He was right then, and Gavin Newsom is right today.
It may be politically expedient to support the death penalty, but it is always morally repugnant.
Let's remember the words of Robert Kennedy on April 5, 1968:
"Whenever any American's life is taken by another American unnecessarily - whether it is done in the name of the law or in the defiance of law, by one man or a gang, in cold blood or in passion, in an attack of violence or in response to violence - whenever we tear at the fabric of life which another man has painfully and clumsily woven for himself and his children, the whole nation is degraded."

My statement on @CAgovernor Newsom's announcement regarding commutation of death sentences. As Chair of the Senate Public Safety Committee, I applaud this decision.

ALT I applaud Governor Newsom’s decision to commute the sentences of those on death row. I believe that the death penalty is immoral, heinous, and incompatible with our values. I would support efforts changing state law to abolish capital punishment, bringing California in alignment with most of the world’s advanced economies.
