Finally an expert weighs in
The frontier of artificial intelligence is advancing at an alarming speed. Over the weekend, industry leaders voiced support for an idea that the American people and many AI researchers in their own labs have been calling for: We must responsibly slow the pace of frontier AI development. A slowdown is critical in order to ensure AI serves the public interest. Pacing AI development does not mean giving up on this technology’s potential to produce life-saving benefits in fields like medicine — some of which we are already seeing. Rather, it is about setting up sensible guardrails so that AI does not completely escape human control and endanger our safety and collective future. This moment demands the leadership of the United States government. Congress must work at an urgent pace to pass new laws and establish a new federal entity to provide oversight and independent testing for this technology, to ensure accountability, and to protect our wellbeing. We need cooperation at an international level as well. The United States must continue to lead the world in developing AI technology even as we seek to impose common-sense safety standards. This means that the president must do his job to protect America’s interests by pursuing a treaty with countries like China to stop dangerous uses of AI, limit the speed of its development, and adopt global standards for testing.

If Dario wants to slow down the pace of AI, he should just move the company to Europe.

Everything they taught you about July 4th, 1776 is a lie. The Redcoats weren't soldiers. They were something else. We recovered the real footage using Utopai 🧵👇

Been coding with AI a lot this week and it's wild how much of an edge real architecture knowledge still is. Seeing frontier models constantly reach for the wrong abstractions. Easy to course-correct, but only if you already know what good looks like.

TikTok Shop + Seedance 2 + Claude Code is f*cking cracked i just built a tool that scrapes the top-selling TikTok Shop products in your niche, pulls every creator video selling them, and lets you recreate any one as an on-brand video for your own product using AI. if you're a DTC brand or ecom operator and you're still paying creators $500 per video or briefing an agency every week, this replaces that entire workflow. here's how it works: > drop in your brand info and 1-3 product photos search your niche on TikTok Shop like "gut health supplements" or "skincare" or whatever you're selling > browse the top-selling products and every creator video promoting them pick a viral video that's already proven to convert > the AI analyzes the hook, structure, and pacing > one click and Seedance 2 generates a new version built around your product why test from scratch when you can just recreate what's already working? RT + reply "VIRAL" and i'll send you the full app + setup guide (must follow so i can dm)

You have to review all LLM code! Codex 5.5 tried to push this awful hack to our Metal backend when it was coding font rendering. It decided to implement hacky "robust buffer access" style OOM check inside the shader and hacked our whole Metal binding architecture to add a special bind group slot 30 (hardcoded) to deliver sizes of all buffer bindings. This of course made the binding model super slow and required extra data for each buffer.

Anonymity is a core principle of the open web. This is a terrible decision by the Greek government, one tha paves the road toward authoritarianism. “Toxicity” is not an excuse for total governmental control of free speech. I hope this preposterous idea is retracted.
A new law in Greece is being proposed that would ban anonymity on social media The new law would require every person to link their real name in an attempt to reduce online toxicity by making people stand behind their comments

I made Solid Queue fiber-based. Threads need one DB connection each: they can all query concurrently. Fibers share one connection because only one runs at a time. 100 concurrent jobs: threads: 102 db connections fibers: 3 db connections Plus 20% faster on real LLM streaming workloads. PR is up on rails/solid_queue. paolino.me/solid-queue-doesn…

This is really bad
Hello, this is Yanis Varoufakis with a piece of news that would have been hilarious if it weren’t so scary. This morning, two policemen appeared on my doorstep to serve a summons ordering me to the police headquarters to be interrogated by the Greek DEA, our drug busting police department. Not as a witness, expert or not, but as the accused. Accused of what? Shortly after New Year’s, I appeared on a podcast organised by young people to answer their questions on everything that concerns Gen Z today: social media, the meaning of life, their job prospects, what I call technofeudalism etc. At some point, they asked me if I had ever used drugs. Determined not to do a Bill Clinton (remember the laughable “I didn’t inhale”?), I said I had. Apart from pot, I told them, I had one experience of taking ecstasy in Sydney 36 years ago. It was pleasant, I danced for 16 hours effortlessly but then, I added, it gave me a migraine for a week – and so I never used again. That was my introduction to making the point that, however pleasant drug taking may seem, there is a price to pay. And that the ultimate price is dependence, addiction – “the end of liberty”, I said emphatically. Do you see where this is going? Yes, the Greek police have opened an investigation of me under the charge of... aiding and abetting the narco-mafia. [Do me a favour folks: Please don’t tell Trump, OK?] Seriously now, at a time of war, genocide, stupendous exploitation and so on, my little trouble with the inane Greek police is neither here nor there. But it is important. Here, in Europe, many people still live under the illusion that we have liberty, rationality and freedom. We don’t. Dark forces are at work, pushing us into a postmodern version of the Dark Ages. So, beware, people! They are out to take away the last remnants of autonomy and freedom we have left. Resistance is, literally, existence.

After many long years, the most widely used React framework in the world has React Server Components support! And the migration story is iterative, not "big bang" 💥 I think React Router's take on RSC is really great. Here's what you need to know.

On the theme of enshittification, if I'm watching YouTube shorts and go back and forth, I get a weird double-audio bug where I can still hear the previous video playing. They made $30 billion in revenue last year, but I guess only have like one vibe-coding engineer intern.

Big companies use our (known problematic) AAC encoder yet none are willing to sponsor improvements
YouTube doesn't use the built-in FFmpeg AAC encoder! They surely use Fraunhofer AAC which is high quality and available in FFmpeg via libfdk_aac in custom builds. The built-in FFmpeg AAC however has a bad reputation, it sounds horrible even at high bitrates and too bad SC uses it

Quick Tip for Email Logos ✉️ ❌ Problem: Gmail client (on mobiles) auto-reverses all colors in dark mode. However, images remain the same so they're not visible. ✅ Solution: Add a subtle white box shadow and white outline around the letters. That's invisible in light mode, but it adds the necessary contrast in dark mode.
