Depressive personalities tend to suffer under the misconception that to have good self-esteem, you must only ever think "nice" thoughts and have "nice" feelings. Excerpt below from Nancy Mcwilliams, Psychoanalytic Case Formulations, p. 175

Self-loathing is self-centeredness. And the self-absorbed thoughts rarely stay in one’s head — they manifest in all sorts of subtle, harmful behaviors — which leads to people being classified, well, “self-absorbed.”

To the Annie G. Rogers appreciation society : now that you have all read A Shining Affliction (you have, right??), have you gone on to read these books of hers, too? Recommended!
The books Incandescent Alphabets and the Unsayable: the Hidden Language of Trauma have some of the best and most compelling writing on the subjective experience of psychosis ive ever read

I keep thinking about this line from a richard rohr lecture: "the opposite of faith is not doubt; the opposite of faith is certitude." people's claims to "certainty" are always a form of denial, a kind of ego-defense. true faith involves an embrace of both doubt and conviction

“All belief is fervant hope, and thus a cover-up for doubt and uncertainty…. Irrevocable commitment to any religion is not only intellectual suicide; it is positive unfaith because it closes the mind to any new vision of the world. Faith is, above all, open-ness—an act of trust in the unknown." -Allen watts

I’d argue psychoanalysis is about inviting people to develop structural capacities to better psychologically run, sit, climb, let go, look out/in, and accept not knowing what is needed, along a dynamically changing journey of life. There is no summit, only those who feel…

This is what reading actually does to you: “Those of us who have been true readers all our life seldom fully realize the enormous extension of our being which we owe to authors. We realize it best when we talk with an unliterary friend. He may be full of goodness and good sense but he inhabits a tiny world. In it, we should be suffocated. The man who is contented to be only himself, and therefore less a self, is in prison. My own eyes are not enough for me, I will see through those of others. Reality, even seen through the eyes of many, is not enough. I will see what others have invented. Even the eyes of all humanity are not enough. I regret that the brutes cannot write books. … Literary experience heals the wound, without undermining the privilege, of individuality. There are mass emotions which heal the wound; but they destroy the privilege. In them our separate selves are pooled and we sink back into sub-individuality. But in reading great literature I become a thousand men and yet remain myself. Like a night sky in the Greek poem, I see with a myriad eyes, but it is still I who see. Here, as in worship, in love, in moral action, and in knowing, I transcend myself; and am never more myself than when I do.” — C.S. Lewis, An Experiment in Criticism

On the other hand, I also have seen that individuals with childhood trauma are more likely to misperceive themselves as having neurodiversity because of social deficits, sense of otherness, and repetitive and dissociative coping strategies. Lack of appropriate parental modelling, shame, anxiety and generalised mistrust can hold individuals back from engaging and acquiring developmentally appropriate social skills. No one is an expert in their life. We all have an unconscious. We all have hard to see (but can be accessed) motives and wishes. We dip in and out of awareness of our various motives, it would be absurdly costly (calories) to be perfectly consciously aware of all things (e.g., blood pressure) that motivate us

My early years of therapy, I didn't yet understand that one can, at once, feel sadness on behalf of someone and not judge them for their predicament. For sympathy and pity are two different constructs, yet they're often confounded. psychologytoday.com/us/blog/…

Psychodynamic psychotherapy is a real relationship with a real person. It is a boundaried attachment experience which the therapeutic contract demands we observe with excruciating honesty. It must happen between two sentient beings that are capable of emotions and especially shame. The therapists unique responsibility is to bring a reflective function to that relationship (whether the client has that reflective function or not), and that reflective function comes from learning to lovingly tolerate shame. Nothing you can get from an AI will provide what I wrote above, although AI can help with other aspects of therapy such as frame-shifting, psychoeducation, and identifying cognitive distortions. This is why I think AI will replace (already is replacing) therapies such as CBT and many other "evidence based" therapies, but it cannot replace psychodyhamic relational psychotherapy. – at Islington, London

🧵 More on mourning: perhaps a more complicated aspect of grief is when the object was not lost through death - but rather when infantile phantasies are interrupted too violently, shutting down omnipotent control and leaving the terror of reality. Or Oedipal phantasies are made

“If a child’s parents are bad objects, he cannot reject them…for he cannot do without them.” Listen i like analytic ideas but this is lazy horseshit fantasizing about what is “normal” or typical. The idea that kids “have to ‘need’ their parents” is empirically not true. Many kids dissociate and learn not to need objects. Many kids are autistic. Many kids have (early) antisocial tendencies. Other infants might be more extroverted and narcissitic in their temperament, and not care about objects. Others are unintelligent (memory deficits) and not able to be aware of how “bad” an object the parents are. Various types of internal dynamics exist and not all infants have the same hardware and software for “needing” an external object.
The child not only internalizes his bad objects because they force themselves upon him and he seeks to control them, but also, and above all, because he needs them. —Ronald Fairbairn
