Many thanks @PamelaBrownCNN for hosting me in @CNNSitRoom I’m in Wash DC this week for @IDWeekmtg today discussing the somewhat early rise of influenza in the west due to H1N1 and a variant known as D.3.1.1. The CDC reports that ferrets immunized with the vaccine strain of virus still neutralize these current strains, but recently the @PennMicro flu lab reported in @biorxivpreprint that some viruses in this group have a potential escape mutant. Bottom line is this: as far as we can tell the available flu vaccines will still be effective and now is the time to vaccinate. For adults remember that flu can be associated with heart attacks and don’t forget to vaccinate your kids. Last year flu caused 24,000 adult deaths in the U.S. and almost 200 pediatric deaths, overwhelmingly among the unvaccinated

Oh. Good advice.
Stop what you’re doing, grab a coffee, put your feet up and LISTEN. Spend 10 minutes of your life to begin with a joke and end with HOPE. Meet Noah Eckstein. If anyone ever tells you that wisdom only arrives once you’ve lived your life THINK AGAIN. I want you to watch this commencement address to the class of 2026 at Harvard University, from the grandson of a Muslim and a Jew who fled the Holocaust. No teleprompter, no notes, just a speech from the heart that EVERY politician who would seek to divide us would do well to learn from. It’s profound in so many ways, but as an old man, Noah reminds me that there is still hope if we just learn to LISTEN. 🎥 TikTok - vm.tiktok.com/ZGdCTq6KK/

Christianity’s global spread was marked by colonialism, forced conversions, destruction of Indigenous cultures and religious persecution. International Religious Freedom Day should celebrate the freedom to believe or not believe, not the spread of Christianity.
America, more than any other nation in world history, was shaped by the Christian tradition of spreading the gospel unto all nations. Join us in celebrating International Religious Freedom Day.

I get why white nationalists and Trump are celebrating BC Conservatives win, but I want to give @LDoerkson a chance to prove he won’t let the extreme wing of his party or staff cater to those views. I hope we see a clear and direct message of reassurance. 🤞🏽#bcpoli #cdnpoli

My late colleague and brilliant co U.S. Science Envoy with me in the Obama Admin the @Caltech Nobel Laureate in Chemistry Ahmed Zewail would disagree. God rest his soul he didn’t have to endure this, and of course RFK Jr forgets that it was the Arab scientists of the Middle Ages who kept Aristotle, Hippocrates, Galen alive to hand it down in the Renaissance. My favorite books on this topic attached
RFK: "There's five hundred million Arabs in the world. And yet they don't produce science. They don't win the Novel Prize. They don't win the Fields Prize. They don't win the Wolf Prize. They don't produce literature."

The next time someone tells you homelessness is caused by addiction, mental illness, laziness, poor choices, or generous social services, show them this. Homelessness is a housing problem. Not ONLY a housing problem, but ALWAYS a housing problem. We can address addiction, mental illness, and poverty, but if people still can't afford a place to call home, we haven't solved homelessness. You cannot end homelessness without housing, it's that simple.

The BC Conservative govt *must* maintain the ban on mink farming in British Columbia I do worry about this, as only last year Lorne Doerkson advocated for the "cessation of this planned cull" at that ostrich farm during an avian disease outbreak #BirdFlu #bchealth #bcpoli
Replying to @PeterHotez
2/n the reason mink are concerning is not just that they are another mammal but that they are a relative of ferrets the major laboratory animal used to study flu. Potentially an enzootic going unchecked among mink just as seasonal flu is accelerating means both H5N1 and H1N1 or H3N2 could reassert and generate a very serious new flu pathogens for humans

Blah blah blah. With a small majority and the 13 non confidence votes in the last two years, Premier hoped to get the Legislature out of stalled mode. He was a great minister, has done terrific things for us. Many NDP voters assumed he’d win, not this bizarre crew.
Caller to CBC today reacting to the BC NDP's loss as a supporter of that party: "David Eby was a terrific minister of housing and Attorney General, but I felt he was a lackluster Premier. This very smart man made a very foolish decision to go to the polls two years early."

1/n Many thanks to @PamelaBrownCNN for hosting me on @CNNSitRoom explaining the recent history of H5N1 how it was introduced into the U.S. wild bird population in 2022; got introduced into hens and caused the price of eggs went up; then in early 2024 it transitioned into dairy cattle but transmission to humans was prevented through milk pasteurization. And now mink…

New: Sources from three countries confirm that the Trump Administration has advocated Viktor Orbán for UN Secretary-General. The US has encouraged Orbán to enter the race, even bringing him the initial idea of a joint U.S.-Russia-China candidacy. WSJ: wsj.com/opinion/viktor-orban…

#BirdFlu is running amok at a mink farm in Utah In April 2023, the BC NDP Govt enacted a permanent ban on live mink on farms Let's hope that the BC Conservatives don't reverse that ban (Remember, Lorne Doerkson wrote an ill-advised letter to the Feds regarding the ostrich cull)
