Today in 1835 was the last time the USA had zero national debt. It has been rising exponentially ever since. #in

Sorry to spoil your party, @EU_Commission. 15 of 27 member states break the Maastricht rules. Not one of the big four meets both criteria. Germany, France, Italy and Spain all fail. Meanwhile the Netherlands plays by the book and gets asked to pay for joint debt. You should enforce, to ensure stability.
The day the EU, as we know it today, was born. 🇪🇺 On 1 November 1993, the Maastricht Treaty entered into force, officially establishing the European Union, formerly the European Communities. Happy birthday to us! 💙

"… I don't believe we shall ever have a good money again before we take the thing out of the hands of government, that is, we can't take [it] violently out of the hands of government, all we can do is by some sly roundabout way introduce something that they can't stop…" (F. A. Hayek, 1984 interview) That interview took place 13 years after Nixon ended the dollar's convertibility to gold, and 24 years before a pseudonymous author, Satoshi Nakamoto, published a possible answer. Hayek couldn't say what that "something" would look like, and Bitcoin's volatility is far from the stable money he had in mind. Still, the whitepaper is the most elegant thing I've read: nine pages that solve double-spending without a trusted party, by making honesty the profitable strategy. That incentive design is why I think its impact will outlast its price.
On October 31, 2008, the mysterious Satoshi Nakamoto appeared on the Cryptography mailing list to share his vision for “#Bitcoin: A Peer-to-Peer Electronic Cash System.” The world would never be the same again.

The world’s oldest national flags, continuously in use: 1. Denmark 2. Netherlands 3. United Kingdom History in Europe is everywhere. As is tradition, I just revisited a lovely tiny coffee & tea specialty shop in Leiden: hetklaverblad.com. It has been in continuous use since 1769, having opened its doors seven years before the American Declaration of Independence.
Infographic sorts national flags by their age. Have a good look at the graphic. It's crazy to remember how new most flags (and the accompanying concepts of what counts as a nation) is. Source: buff.ly/2pV8lrY

AI may cause a fiscal Armageddon. In the Netherlands 55% of tax revenues (including social security) are linked to employment. AI competes with tax-paying employees. When employment inevitably drops, so will fiscal revenues.

Bitcoin Core is some of the most reviewed code in the world. We were curious how our frontier AI model would handle it. Last month we ran 16 agents across 5 of the top models for a week to look for issues in Bitcoin Core v32.0rc1 Impressively, they surfaced two minor items - both now disclosed responsibly. Agentic teams have been a huge unlock so far for our security efficiency. They're also remarkable to watch.

Not good. Embarrassment for the EU.
And this predictably proves to be yet another clusterfuck by the EU: they announce to much fanfare last month that Canada is to become the EU's first "associate member," only to come back weeks later and say "upon reflection, we didn't really think this one through, offer rescinded, our bad" What happened is that the ever-horrendous Von Der Leyen literally improvised the offer into her speech - it wasn't in her prepared remarks (npr.org/2026/09/16/nx-s1-597…) - without consulting member states before, several of which were understandably furious, all the more because the term has no legal meaning. Hard to overstate the sheer level of amateurism: we're used to the EU commission not giving a damn about what European citizens think - that's standard - but skipping the 27 governments is a whole new level. And this is all the more absurd that Von Der Leyen, as per European treaties, has zero business doing foreign policy in the first place. Long story short, the end result, which could be the slogan for the EU as a whole these days, is that nobody's happy and the EU ridiculed itself on the world stage.

I would hope, although I seriously doubt it, that this began with a mea culpa about his own inaction when Putin invaded Ukraine in 2014. Yes, we want everyone supporting Ukraine against Russia aggression, but Obama is a badly flawed messenger.
OBAMA: The White House is bending the knee to Vladimir Putin of Russia and selling out Ukrainians who are fighting for their freedom and democracy.

This is honestly shocking. Three months ago, Hong Wang was awarded the Fields Medal for resolving the Kakeya conjecture in three dimensions. Today, OpenAI released a proposed proof of the conjecture in ALL dimensions. And that’s not all. It also announced a proposed existence proof for quantum chromodynamics and a proposed refutation of the Exponential Time Hypothesis. Experts say that, if confirmed, these would be Nobel prize and Turing award level discoveries respectively. A journalist just asked me: “What remains for humans to do?” I think it’s becoming increasingly clear that more and more problem solving will be automated. But humans will remain crucial in determining the direction of discovery. Deciding which problems are worth solving. Because the value of a discovery depends on our needs, our priorities and the kind of world we want to build. There will be a shift from problem solving to problem setting. I also think there will be huge individual differences. People with strong critical thinking skills, creativity and imagination will be supercharged by AI. People without those skills risk surrendering to it. I’m particularly concerned for children, who may never develop these skills. I think epistemic literacy - how to distinguish information from knowledge - is the single most important skill we should be teaching.

China's 2008 is happening now. Property investment in China dropped -21% YoY in the first 9 months of 2026, its largest decline for this period of the year on record. This marks a deterioration from a -20% YoY decline in the first 8 months of 2026. The latest drop is also significantly worse than the -16% decline recorded during the 2020 pandemic. Property investment in China has now contracted every month since 2022, its longest declining streak on record. For perspective, during the 2008 Financial Crisis, this figure never fell below +1% YoY growth. China's property sector is experiencing a historic downturn.

**You need to watch Zelenskyy's interview with Steven Bartlett.** Sitting in front of the camera is an utterly exhausted, at times visibly broken man who has spent almost five years personally managing a war, making critical decisions day and night. From the very first minutes, you can see just how drained he is. When asked the routine question, "How are you?" he replies that he barely sleeps because he spends his nights in military group chats, moving the last remaining air defense systems from one region to another. Two stories are particularly heartbreaking. The first is about a missile that struck a children's playground within seconds, while parents watched from their apartment windows as their children were torn apart. The second is about presenting posthumous military awards to the families of fallen soldiers: "You present an award to a father, feel his strong hand, and then he quietly asks, 'Can we hug?' At that moment, I simply cease to exist inside. These people are gone. They will never be the same again." When the host tries to take him back into his past, showing old photographs from Kryvyi Rih, his student comedy performances, his voice acting as Paddington Bear, and scenes from *Servant of the People*, Zelenskyy looks at them with detachment, almost as though he is watching someone else's life. He also recalls February 2022 without any attempt to portray himself as a hero. He says that for the first 20 days, he simply ran from office to office on adrenaline, calling everyone he could and trying to organize deliveries of water and food to Kyiv. Fear and the full realization of what had happened only caught up with him three weeks later, when Bucha was liberated and mass graves containing hundreds of murdered civilians were discovered. Using Bucha as an example, he explains why advice from outsiders to simply negotiate a quick deal causes him such deep frustration: "Imagine that in the United States or Britain, a mass grave is discovered containing 500 tortured people with their hands tied. How could you simply forgive everything after that?" The rest of the conversation revolves around the deadlock in which Ukrainians, and indeed everyone involved, now find themselves. Zelenskyy explains the causes of the war in simple terms: Moscow is trying to forcibly rebuild the Soviet empire because Ukraine's integration into Europe would finally bury that project. But when the conversation turns to the present, there is unmistakable bitterness in his words. Almost one-fifth of Ukraine's territory is occupied. The east is under relentless bombardment. Cities are left without electricity. People are dying every single day. Meanwhile, every discussion about a ceasefire runs into the same demand: Kyiv must withdraw even farther from its fortified positions, without any guarantees that Russia will not launch another offensive a year later. Toward the end, the conversation turns to Trump and Ukrainian strikes on Russian oil facilities. Trump publicly reprimands Zelenskyy over attacks on Russian refineries because he fears rising diesel prices for American farmers ahead of the elections. And this is where you can see just how deeply that approach affects Zelenskyy. His country is burning. Moscow has rejected his proposal for a mutual halt to attacks on energy infrastructure. Patriot missiles paid for by Europe are being redirected by the Americans to the Middle East. And somehow, Zelenskyy is the one being blamed for fuel prices in the United States. The entire interview leaves you with a profoundly bleak feeling. Here is a man trapped between the daily deaths of people in his own country and the pragmatic bargaining of allies who have their own elections, their own interests, and their own political calculations. And yet, he can no longer step away from this responsibility. **Watch it.**
