The Tip Jar Has a History America Doesn't Talk About, SLAVERY!
Tipping started as a European aristocratic flex, a way for the wealthy to show status. American travelers picked it up abroad and brought it home in the 1800s.
Here's where it gets heavy: after the Civil War, companies like the Pullman Company turned tipping into a tool. They hired newly emancipated Black workers as porters and servers, then classified those jobs as tip-dependent, paying little to nothing in direct wages. Customers covered the cost of labor instead of employers. Black workers carried the weight of an entire industry's profit margins on the backs of strangers' generosity.
That system never really left. The federal tipped minimum wage sits at $2.13 an hour right now, a direct descendant of that post-slavery labor structure. Black and Latina women make up a huge share of tipped workers today, and they report the highest rates of economic insecurity and harassment in the service industry.
States like California and Washington require full minimum wage plus tips. Every state can build toward that model.
Know your history. Tip accordingly. Push for fair wages everywhere you can. 💪🏾

Shout lout to for breaking this down Dr. Van Moody In 1898, 73% of Alabama's revenue came from convict leasing—arresting Black men on fake charges and selling their labor. Their work built fortunes while others remained in bondage. We must change our financial path to break this cycle.

Remember when first started and we said we would meet at the firehouse or the library on Saturdays at 12pm if anything goes down?
This was a while back.
Almost everyone has forgotten this.

Africans didn't create the hate, it was imported by the slave and colonial masters, controlled the media and watch them kill each other. That's the playbook.

In 1897, the U.S. Army wanted to know if bicycles could replace horses for infantry. So they took 20 Black soldiers of the 25th Infantry – the Buffalo Soldiers – and gave them a mission: ride from Fort Missoula, Montana to St. Louis. 1,900 miles.
The “Iron Riders” carried 60-pound packs, rifles, and one spare tire each. They crossed the Rockies, the Badlands, and the Great Plains on heavy, single-speed bikes with no roads. Private John Findley fixed flats with strips of his own shirt. They drank from cattle tanks and were refused water in Wyoming towns.
It took 41 days. They averaged 52 miles a day. When they rolled into St. Louis, the white newspapers called it a “stunt.” The Army said “impractical” and shut the program down. But the Iron Riders proved it could be done.
Their commanding officer wrote: “No horse could have made it. These men did.”
Readers added context they thought people might want to know
The 1897 bicycle expedition occurred as described, but the picture is AI generated and the quote "No horse could have made it. These men did." does not appear in historical records or Lt. Moss's reports. Horses would have been the standard way to make that journey.
