For younger people: this is not normal. Older folks have lived entire lifetimes and never experienced schools being closed due to widespread illness - until now.

Weird convo at dentist today. I stopped going to her for cleanings as I found an independent hygienist who runs a solo practice & will N95 for me and open windows. Unfortunately I needed work done on a chipped tooth. Anyway, she points to the Airfanta wearable and asks “is that

You all need to understand that there is a well-funded movement to kill Wikipedia as an institution. The dream of an internet that provided universal access to knowledge was a mirage. It threatened too many powerful people, so now we have AI summaries and illiteracy.
Can we also talk about how Wikipedia entries are no longer at the top of a search 😭

At large outdoor gatherings, I suspect the vast majority of transmission occurs when attendees are indoors using restrooms, going to restaurants, shopping, using public transportation, etc. People's infection narratives are prone to myriad psychological biases, defenses, misremembering, and distortions. "I must have gotten it outdoors -- terrible luck" is a lot more satisfying than "I probably got it when eating at an Applebee's." That said, it's not rocket science. Anyone living much in the north knows exactly what exhalation plumes look like in the winter. Sitting across from a rando for a spell, or standing amid two families where everyone has COVlD suggests a basic disinterest in survival.

This economy is not sustainable I just spoke with a few of the parents of my students. They're starting to give up extra curricular activities. They're cutting back on streaming services. They're going out to dinner less. Many just won't buy meat anymore. Some are telling me they can't afford vacations next year. And now between groceries, gas & healthcare people are deciding what they have to give up. This shouldn't be happening in America I don't know what the end game is here, but something has to give

Useful analysis by @sergeilkp of current H5N1 in US cows (B3.13) Idaho: stubborn reservoir site Washington: current focus of expansion in dairy cows Utah: poorly-controlled mink-farm outbreak PB2 T271A; concerning mutation new to B3.13 that better adapts it to many mammals
🐄🧬 An interactive visual explainer on the Oct 2026 H5N1 dairy cattle & human outbreak: • The 14 WA cattle genomes (10 of 14 are 0-SNP identical) • How 4 national selective sweeps squeezed the US reservoir from ~376 → ~7.2 effective herds • Three diverging forks after the bottleneck (including mammalian PB2: T271A + D678G) • Multi-scale ChronAeon TimeTree Nₑ & timing estimates (4–13d local expansion vs. 3–6 mo unsampled stems) Built with SRA de novo assembly + Nextstrain + HyphAeon + ChronAeon 👇 spond.github.io/CV.js/blog/2…

A wee success today about masks. Was in an optical office and the receptionist was wearing an N95 but the optometrist wasn't and had on a baggy blue. I had an extra, new N99 & said it was gift for them & to try it. Gave them the information about microfibres being protective, 1/2

Make antivirals accessible and affordable BEFORE people end up seriously ill. Early treatment matters. What’s more cost-effective: making antivirals available or paying for ER visits, hospital beds and intensive care? Invest in early treatment, not just crisis care. 👇
The flu season is predicted to be a harsh one. Xofluza (baloxavir marboxil) is approved and marketed in Canada. Does your Dr know about it? Do you (or they) have flu rapid tests? Will they prescribe it? Does your pharmacy (or any) carry it? We need all the tools.

Corporate greed is Microsoft making $134 billion in profits last year, receiving $19 billion in tax breaks under Trump, paying a lower federal income tax rate than a nurse and getting rid of 60,000 workers. “Corporations will create jobs if they get tax breaks” is a total scam.

Covid-19 is surging across the US right now. I’ve been inundated on social media lately with nasty stories from people sick for WEEKS with fatigue, razor blade throat, headaches, lingering cough, etc You may be super healthy, fit or believe in conspiracies like that “it’s just a cold”…but trust me Covid can and will fuck your life up. I was healthier than most and I’m still dealing with consequences from a Covid infection in 2023. Needless to say, please heed caution…N95 masks are super effective. You do not want to end up like me because you thought “meh, no big deal.”

I'm in my 40s. I'm a lawyer. My wife is a lawyer. We both work full time. We cannot afford the house my parents purchased on a single electrician's income in their 30s. We cannot afford the house my immigrant grandparents purchased on a single MTA bus driver's salary in their 30s. They had SIX CHILDREN. For 30 years, politicians in Washington & their oligarch allies convinced regular people that this was just about avocado toast and fancy coffee. In reality, this is end-stage capitalism. Everyone is stuck in place. It's impossible to buy a home. It's too costly to move. We work too much to have passion projects. We don't have enough savings to start our own businesses. We can't afford to go without healthcare to do it. Thanks for writing this article @troy_closson. Would be very happy to discuss further. nytimes.com/2026/10/25/nyreg…
