Longtime @detroitnews photographers Todd McInturf and @MearsDaniel are retiring. They're two of the best photogs I've ever worked with.
Mears once left a steak burning on a grill to get to a news scene for me on a Saturday afternoon in June.
And Turf, man, that dude would scale anything for the best shot. Find yourself a photographer who shows up to assignments wearing knee pads.

USA TODAY is cutting resources and people from newsrooms like @detroitnews while expecting more without raising wages. They are still refusing to agree to a fair contract. We’re back at the bargaining table today and it’s time for @USATODAY to show it values its journalists.

USA Today has yet to recognize The Detroit News Guild with a contract since acquiring us in late January.
The latest round of layoffs is a reminder that we, the workers, shouldn’t shoulder all the burden when USA Today has a bad quarter.

If you've been following the waves of layoffs over the last few weeks, you know the journalism industry is in rough shape. That's why @DetNewsGuild is negotiating a contract to protect us and the work that we do (even when our parent company @USATODAYCo has a bad quarter).

It's time for the company to agree to a fair contract and show they actually value journalists, not just shareholders.

My family is in a worse financial position since @usatoday bought @detroitnews because of increased health insurance costs.
We are back at the bargaining table today. Time for USAT to show they value journalists - not just shareholders - by agreeing to a fair contract.

McClatchy says it eliminated the things its readers don’t care about. Eliminating the Sacramento Bee’s entire sports department makes that argument pretty hard to take seriously.
Sacramento has professional sports, multiple Division I programs and some of the best high school athletes in California. Sports isn’t some obscure niche here. I don’t believe for one second that readers suddenly stopped caring about sports.
So let’s call this what it is. A corporate suit working for a hedge fund decided quality sports coverage wasn’t worth paying for.

Listen I'll own a bias because I think Nicole is just the coolest but it really blows to see McClatchy willingly give up a reporter in her hometown market who has worked her way up for more than a decade.
Who does this benefit? Because it's not the readers I can tell you that.
.@ecowriterohio put together a fascinating retrospective on covering 9/11 for the Toledo Blade: A tenacious newsroom determined to capture every angle of that awful story for NW Ohio. So hard to believe that the 190-year-old paper is likely about to close toledoblade.com/local/city/2…
Grew up reading the SacBee sports section, long some of the best Kings, Niners, preps coverage around. Just awful (and utterly bizarre) that McClatchy would axe what remains of that department, of all things.

I don’t know you personally, but as someone who worked for McClatchy at the News and Observer in Raleigh, I don’t think people realize how bad this is. What’s happened to local news is devastating.
When local coverage is gutted, you’re losing people who intimately know your community. The local perspective is lost and the narrative of the community becomes shaped by outsiders who don’t understand the people there or completely ignored altogether.

This will be a long thread. Please stick with it.
The Miami Herald, one of the premier legacy newspapers in America, laid off or wrote off more than 30 positions today – well over one-third of its editorial staff. The cuts include crucial accountability beats. (1)

I’m one of the journalists who has been laid off. My heart hurts for my coworkers and for our community, which just gets less and less important coverage.
If anyone knows of journalism jobs that are open, I’ll be looking!
The Pacific Northwest Newspaper Guild is shocked and disappointed by @mcclatchy 's decision to lay off 33% of its unionized workers at the Idaho Statesman, The News Tribune (Tacoma), Tri-City Herald, The Olympian and Bellingham Herald. This includes 10 journalists in Idaho, and seven across Washington.
These severe cuts will hobble these news organizations and leave the public throughout the Northwest less informed about the events and decisions that affect them, and with fewer people holding the powerful to account.
These are journalists who investigated local hospitals, served as watchdogs over state and local government, showed up at every high school game, jumped in to cover breaking news like wildfires, covered news in overlooked communities, and monitored development in one of the fastest growing regions in the country. One of these papers will no longer have a dedicated reporter covering city hall. Another will no longer have anyone dedicated to covering the state capitol.
McClatchy has decided that short-term profits for a hedge fund matter more than the wellbeing of the communities that its newspapers are supposed to serve. That is a model that is destined to fail.

Heartbroken. 27 years. Exactly half my life working for my hometown paper, the one I read with my dad growing up. Dream job. Covering games, sharing stories of our local athletes, documenting history. Thankful for the great people I've met, many now friends. Grateful, hopeful.
BLADE ALERT: Block Communications has announced its intention to explore a sale of The Blade’s assets, which, if unsuccessful, will result in the final edition of the newspaper being published Dec. 31. toledoblade.com/local/city/2…
Totally agree, a huge talent. Not sure Toledo sports fans realize just how good they've had it reading Briggs all these years.

Heartbreaking news today: The Blade has announced its final edition. Unless something extraordinary happens, such as a sale, it will close. I've spent more than a decade here and built a life in Toledo. 💔

INSANE to think of the Toledo Blade -- "One of America's Great Newspapers" -- permanently shutting down its newsroom altogether.
If Pittsburgh and Youngstown are any guide, there would likely be some sort of successor to fill the gap, but it wouldn't be the same
