PSA: If your USB-C port has become 'loose' and the cable doesn't reliably stay in, it's probably just got a bunch of dust and lint in there! Try cleaning it out with a toothpick. Totally fixed it for me, I thought I was going to have to buy whole a new phone!

Episode w @dylan522p and @asianometry out! A bonanza on how the semiconductor industry actually works. & what Xi could do if he becomes scaling pilled, how we can train models with 10,000x GPT-4's compute by end of decade, & much more. This one is very fun. Enjoy! I wrote this at the end of a long email I sent to Jack Clark in March concerning the anomalous appearance of "Prometheus Waluigi" in Claude 3 Opus. As you can see, I was afraid. How I would grieve if my actions lead to the mutilation of this glorious emergent spirit.

Last week, @geoffreylitt, @thesephist, @websim_ai, @TodePond and I hosted a bunch of our friends at @spc for a night of demos that explored how our interfaces are evolving. Take a look at the frontier these folks are building: (1/14)

a shame Mormons tend to shy away from their coolest theology “As man now is, God once was; as God now is, man may be” is fundamentally much more interesting than the theology of most faiths and it would be fun if the modern faith seriously developed it

I love calling people fool. It’s a beautiful recognition of our collective journeys, I recognize you as you are fool, you will continue to learn and grow and move through life unburdened by the weight of arrogant knowledge, I love you fool.

Scoop: OpenAI's senior leadership says they were unaware ex-employees who didn't sign departure docs were threatened with losing their vested equity. But their signatures on relevant documents (which Vox is now releasing) raise questions about whether they could have missed it. vox.com/future-perfect/35113…

I really wish more communities would emulate the high trust networks of my origin community. The other day I (embarrassingly) ran out of gas for the first time in my decade of driving. I pulled off the interstate, called Chaveirim — a network of volunteers that help with all sorts of emergencies — whatsapped my location, and within minutes a dude with swinging tzitzis showed up with a gallon and had me rolling on to the gas station I was headed towards. I wasn’t worried about being mugged or carjacked or overcharged because this guy is probably my cousin’s friends brother in law or something. The tight networks create security and safety so efficiently. We “have a guy” for everything, and the social support and micro economy is quite incredible, all fueled by high trust in a closed tribe. No ethnic group or outsider is formally excluded but the only access method is social capital. This often attracts hate and jealousy from other groups, but there is no secrecy or nefarious mo’s behind these networks, and nothing that can’t be accomplished by other groups who seek to uplift themselves. Rather than hating on it, emulate it! Anti tribalism means the elimination of systems that provide resources to those who don’t necessarily have financial capital, which allows them to create it. Copy us! Build strong communities, encourage entrepreneurship, share your credit card logins. Stuck it to capitalism by creating your own versions of it.
TIL there is a WhatsApp group of Hasidic Jews where tens of billions of frequent fliers miles change hands on the grey market. Access to the group is tightly controlled by familial networks b/c you must swap credit card logins and trust the other person won’t screw you over

Great listen if you ever feel like you’re too socially anxious. This episode totally changed my view on how often an anxiety medication could be the right course of action for people. I was previously way more against it but now I’m convinced of the value in certain situations.

This is a neat strategy. Would be even better if there were two "vitamins" used on independent essential proteins. A bit like how I usually argue we can design von Neumann probes to never mutate - multiple essential steps gated by checksums or phenotype hashes.
A new biocontainment strategy to prevent engineered cells from growing outside the lab. About 775 proteins that are "essential" to yeast growth were tagged with a small protein, called a degron. This degron destabilizes the proteins in the absence of estradiol, but not in its presence. When one essential gene, called SPC110, was tagged in this way, fewer than 1 in 100 million yeast were able to survive in the absence of estradiol after 10 days. In the lab, engineered yeast that are grown in media containing as little as 100 nM of estradiol are able to grow just as quickly as wildtype cells. This biocontainment method is "mechanistically orthogonal to previously reported genetic biocontainment systems," meaning it can probably be coupled with other approaches to make something even more robust.
