My latest: Two prominent Chinese activists were tried for subversion Friday in Guangzhou in a closed-door proceeding, while supporters and activists criticized Chinese authorities for putting on a "sham trial" and calling for their immediate release. voanews.com/a/metoo-journali…

When @APSAtweets holds its annual meeting in LA, workers at JW Marriot Los Angeles LA Live may be picketing the venue. UNITE HERE Local 11 is asking the conference to relocate. Sign this petition to push APSA to do just that: docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1F…
Realizing how much China is an authoritarian outlier today. Theories that I have always felt only offer modest leverage on the Chinese case—theories about coup-proofing, “selectorates”, etc.—seem immensely useful for understanding Russia right now.

Rising corporate profits were the largest contributor to Europe’s inflation over the past two years as companies increased prices by more than the spiking costs of imported energy. bit.ly/441jfya
Great write-up by @chinalabour about what seems to be an upsurge in strikes and protests by Chinese workers against factory relocations and layoffs. clb.org.hk/en/content/surge-…. Nice run-down of employees' legal options, in particular.

A question for Twitter: where does one go in Western Canada to re-mount a treasured calligraphy scroll? Also, how does one safely remove what looks like blueberry jam or a smoothie from the scroll’s paper?
Congrats to @ubcokanagan class of 2023. First graduation I’ve attended!

On the 34th anniversary of June 4th Massacre, we remember the thousands of peaceful protesters gunned down in the streets around #Tiananmen Square in Beijing, and countless other victims of atrocities in other Chinese cities in 1989.

"Workers and unions are right to be furious at this ruling. But we should be careful not to sensationalize or overstate it—which could do more damage to the right to strike than the ruling itself does, by making workers scared to exercise it."
