I really like Kemi Badenoch, but today’s proposal on inheritance tax makes no sense to me.
If your principal private residence is completely free of IHT when passed to your children, it creates a huge incentive to maximise the amount of wealth tied up in your home.
Why invest in AIM shares, private companies or other productive assets and potentially pay IHT, when you can put the money into a bigger house and pass it on tax-free?
Tax policy should encourage investment in productive assets, not create an even bigger incentive to pour wealth into residential property.

This is not acceptable. I attended the conference and have come away inspired and invigorated. Whether you agree or disagree with the approach, this level of harassment is not acceptable in any way.
I have received criticism and even a threat at my home address for organizing the @ISLCPAIS conference. I pored my heart and soul into it because I believe boosting collaboration and bringing together the bright minds is fundamental for speeding up the process. What did I do wrong? It’s as genuine question after self reflection…

After years of desperate attempts to advocate for better research funding for ME, we are finally seeing good research come through - such as from DecodeME and other projects.
So I am furious at those whose first reaction to a conference on IACCs was to throw rocks.

I try to keep things PG-13 on here, but honestly you’ve got to be fucking kidding me with this bullshit. And I mean that in the most “scholarly” way possible.
Criticism? Hurts but part of the deal.
Threats? Do better. The bar is in hell. People should be able to step over that.

The idea that researchers are public representatives of patients is wrong.
Nobody who doesn’t have Long Covid, or isn’t close to someone who does, has any idea who a single Long Covid researcher is.
Their actions outside the research itself will have zero material impact. Their work will affect treatment and understanding of the disease through published findings. That’s it. They won’t create a movement, change social policy, or shift public opinion.
No one knows any cancer researchers, MS researchers, or heart disease researchers. They aren’t presidents or celebrities. The only people watching the conferences are patients and other Long Covid researchers.
It’s a bubble, and every disease has one. The saying “you only care about your health when you lose it” exists for a reason.
The average person hardly exercises, eats badly, is far too stressed at work, spends far too long on screens, and plenty smoke or take drugs. They don’t care about medical conferences and they never will.
Enjoy the conferences for the research. There is nothing else happening there.

🔴There is a painful debate right now because some Long COVID researchers attended a recent conference without masks.
I understand why many patients are upset.
Long COVID is often triggered by an airborne virus.
Many people became disabled after an infection that society now treats as normal.
So seeing experts discuss Long COVID in crowded indoor spaces without masks can feel contradictory, painful and even disrespectful.
That reaction is understandable.
But I also think we need to be realistic about where we direct the anger.

I understand why patients care about masking, but I think we sometimes lose sight of the bigger picture. If a researcher presents ME or Long COVID research without a mask, turning the discussion into “where is your mask?” does nothing to advance the research itself.
Researchers should be judged primarily on the quality of their science, the evidence they produce, and whether they are moving us toward biomarkers and effective treatments. We need funding, rigorous research and collaboration not purity tests over whether someone is wearing a mask at a conference.
Be opinionated on those who dismiss us, not those who study us. Perhaps their is nothing better to talk about!:)

The weird dead cat bunch really believe they are fighting the big fight by threatening researchers, doctors and patients. I’ve never seen any of them do any positive campaigning or fund raising. It’s all stalking, harassment, doxxing and abuse. Angry kids in the playground stuff.

It means every year will be among the coolest for the rest of your life.
