In an Oct. 20 meeting, Kushner told Zelensky that he should pause the strikes because he and Steve Witkoff were dedicating a lot of time, energy, and jet fuel to mediating with Moscow. A 30-day pause on refineries would be a way for Ukraine to show gratitude.
REFINED STRATEGY: An unofficial pause in Ukrainian strikes on Russian refineries is expected to last until after the U.S. midterms but potentially deeper into November. It began last week at the height of a crisis in U.S.-Ukrainian relations. wsj.com/world/ukraine-pauses…

The central argument of my book, VALLEY OF DEATH, is that the growing dependence of the U.S. and its allies on commercially developed technologies critical to warfare would inevitably create conflicts over who controls them. The unfolding Starlink controversy is a case in point.

Is Latin America finally moving up the global high-tech value chain? Some remarkable numbers suggest the region is making progress. A few highlights from a fascinating new @AmerQuarterly piece in collaboration with JP Morgan Private Bank:
• 🇲🇽 Mexico briefly overtook Taiwan as the largest supplier of advanced technology products to the U.S. in 2025. In the first half of 2026, its high-tech exports to the U.S. surged another 47% to $98.3 billion. The U.S. now gets 40% of its server imports from Mexico.
• 🇧🇷 Brazil is emerging as a major hub for AI infrastructure. Already home to 218 data centers, the world's 11th-largest total, Brazil could see its capacity more than double by 2030. Its abundant renewable energy is a major competitive advantage.
• 🇨🇷 Costa Rica offers a compelling model for moving beyond commodity exports. Medical devices already account for roughly 40% of its exports, and the country is now building a semiconductor industry through partnerships among universities, government and multinational companies.
• 🇩🇴 The Dominican Republic is another country to watch. Its electronics exports grew 50% from 2018 to 2023, and its extensive free trade zone network could help it become a significant player in semiconductor assembly and testing.
• 🌎 The bigger picture: Latin America's exports of information and communications technology services nearly DOUBLED from 2020 to 2024. The region has a real opportunity to capture more of the global AI boom—but sustained gains will depend on education, R&D, energy infrastructure and smart public policy.

UPDATE: Ukraine’s foreign minister rejected the idea of a peace summit without Kyiv, saying it would “encourage Putin to continue his war.”
“As long as he continues this terror, there should be no place for him at any table,” Andrii Sybiha wrote Monday on X.

To be clear: Some facts are neither in dispute nor unclear. Our photographer was clearly marked as Press. She was clearly beaten. These are not partisan or risible statements, but indisputable. We urge a thorough investigation and accountability.
The Prime Minister’s Office:
The facts surrounding the confrontation near Abu Falah, during which Washington Post photojournalist Heidi Levine was allegedly assaulted, remain unclear and are under investigation.
Israel unequivocally condemns violence against anyone—Jews, Arabs, Christians or journalists. Those responsible will be held accountable.
But serious questions remain. Reports indicate some 200 Arabs and far-left activists confronted approximately 40 Israeli youths. Footage shows masked individuals on both sides hurling objects, amid reports of fireworks fired at Jewish youths. Other footage appears to show Levine knocked down and immediately helped to her feet by the same unidentified individual.
The investigation must establish the facts, including who initiated the violence.
We will not allow disputed incidents to be exploited to demonize the hundreds of thousands of law-abiding Jewish residents of Judea and Samaria.
The facts must determine the conclusions. Not the headlines.

Now that my friend and, sadly, former colleague @shayndi is on her way to CBS to work for @bariweiss, it’s a good time to share all her hit stories—those she authored but also spearheaded as an editor (and not what she didn’t). Thread on our coverage under her leadership.
