The voting site wasn’t removed. It’s never been used in midterms before. If you want to go down the rabbit hole, @AndySpecht has an explainer. #ncpol wral.com/news/state/fact-che…
North Carolina A&T students marched an hour each way to vote on the first day of early voting after their campus polling site was removed by the Guilford County Elections Board. Proud 👏🏽

My 7-year-old son can’t watch sports with me anymore. Not because of the games, but because of the commercials. The horror movie trailers are the worst. The terrifying imagery can send him into a spiral of anxiety that lasts well beyond the 30-second ad. These are images his young mind simply isn’t ready to process. We talk a lot about mental health in this country, especially in sports. Yet between the relentless gambling ads, alcohol promotions and genuinely disturbing horror trailers, I’ve reached a point where watching an MLB or NFL game with my kids requires me to monitor every commercial break. I love sports. I work in sports. Some of my favorite childhood memories were made watching games with my family. I want that for my sons. I wish we could exercise better judgment about what we’re putting in front of families during sporting events. Sports should bring generations together. Instead, I’m increasingly forced to treat game day like an adults-only event. Something feels very wrong about that.

A look inside the Discovery Place Nature Museum. It's clear this museum is ready to open its doors. Will the county declare Discovery Place in default and either dramatically change plans for the building or spend millions each year trying to run it? Or will the county demand Discovery Place repay $14.6 million and allow the museum to open? And what happens to the otters?!

People mad for me just calling it the gulf, people mad calling it the Gulf of Mexico, people mad for calling it the Gulf of America. This is the timeline we live in, I’ll call it the gulf & provide the forecast. The ocean doesn’t care what we will call it. It’ll still be there.

When Stephanie Sneed and Raki McGregor sought a $400,000 contract from the Mecklenburg County Sheriff's Office, they pitched it under the business name of former CMPD Chief Johnny Jennings. Jennings says he had no idea the pitch was submitted! Former CMPD Chief Johnny Jennings tells @wsoctv that he has no affiliation with former CMS Board Chair Stephanie Sneed and Raki McGregor. That's despite Sneed and McGregor seeking a contract with the Mecklenburg County Sheriff's Office under the name of Jennings' business, JCG704 (Jennings Consulting Group) Jennings says he met Raki McGregor through a friend and McGregor contacted him and asked for support on a project he was working on to provide consulting services for MCSO. Jennings says he expressed interest in assisting because he knows Sheriff McFadden well. Jennings says he met with Raki and Sneed to discuss the proposal and he agreed to work with them if they were awarded a contract. He says that meeting was the end of any formal discussions he had about this. He says he hasn't talked to Raki McGregor or Stephanie Sneed in months. He says he has never discussed the proposal with Sheriff McFadden and he did not even know McGregor and Sneed pitched it to the sheriff. He says he just learned through news stories. He says Raki McGregor and Stephanie Sneed are not business partners with JCG704 and he is not working on any other projects with them. He also says he has no knowledge of any other business ventures between McGregor and Sneed. Sheriff Garry McFadden released a statement today confirming the non-involvement of Jennings, despite the presentation name dropping him and the use of his company's name. From Sheriff McFadden: As discussion continues regarding the Charlotte-Mecklenburg school board, the Mecklenburg County Sheriff's Office will refrain from commenting on the broader issue. However, I want to clarify our communications regarding JCG 704 LLC, the company identified in the slide presentation. MCSO has not discussed this subject matter at any time with Chief Jennings. “Chief Jennings has not communicated with me in my capacity as Sheriff, or with my staff, regarding any proposal or contractual discussions related to this matter. Given our longstanding friendship and years of service together in law enforcement, I believe it is important to make this distinction clear,” Sheriff McFadden said.

just get the legos for your kid, man. what on earth is this post? you're using your child to make people mad and get twitter bucks.
My son broke his arm today so I took him out for ice cream and said he could get a LEGO set and we could build it together. We went to Walmart. Every single LEGO set, even ones that were $7.99, were locked up behind glass. We walked down another isle… same thing. Every single week I have walked in here and more items are locked up behind glass and it takes FOREVER to have anyone help you open something and they make you feel awful for it. It’s honestly barely worth shopping here at all… I felt so bad for my kid. We ended up just leaving without a LEGO set. Whatever we are doing with society that has brought us here… it’s gotta end. This is insane and it’s destroying childhood.

Last week, exactly 10 days before my 5-year anniversary at The Charlotte Observer, my position was eliminated by McClatchy along with 7 of my colleagues. And it happened less than 48 hours after being told corporate had given the green light to bring back my podcast they whacked two years earlier. This means the paper of record that has covered the franchise since its inception in 1987 will no longer have a writer dedicated to giving readers the latest daily insight on the team. Training camp starts in two weeks. During my career in this industry, which has spanned more than 25 years, I've had my share of tough assignments. Following in the footsteps of a legend and someone whose name is permanently affixed to two areas in Spectrum Center ranks right up there. I'm grateful, thankful and forever humbled that I was the one chosen to take on the huge responsibility. And I'm proud of the content I produced. Every single bit of it, including a recent string of nothing but exclusives. Thanks to all those who consumed my work and musings about the #Hornets. It's deeply appreciated. Cheers to what's next.

Firing journalists and then blaming them is a wicked way to go about it. @theobserver has been highly relevant. They’ve owned several important stories in the city this summer.
NEW: Huge layoffs across McClatchy newspapers today, with some newsrooms gutted by a third. An internal email from management says consumer revenue has dipped 41% and "we cannot continue investing where subscriber interest does not support the investment"
