the biggest difference between the public and analytics models on rating nba players is the public tends to value players more for 1v1 skills rather than 5v5 skills.
In 1v1, you either have the ball or are guarding the ball.
In 5v5, you are offball a lot on both ends, spacing, passing, rotating, reading passing lanes, boxing out and rebounding, and dealing with a much more cluttered and complicated game. it's a different set of skills.
nevertheless, the eyetest tends to focus on the 1v1 skills in the 5v5 game, because that's where the ball is.
of course, the 1v1 skills are very important in the 5v5 game, but there's another group of skills that shift the evaluation. so in JB's case, i think he's a top 15 1v1 player in the league, but ranks lower in 5v5, because he's not as strong in the 5v5 skills.

One prominent politician who hasn't chimed in yet on the reversal of @USMNT's Folarin Balogun's 1-game suspension: Mayor Zohran Mamdani.
Before the suspension was reversed, tho, Mamdani said on his "Morning Pitch" stream yesterday that Balogun was "cruelly" given a red card.
Another terrible call from @leighdiffey not IDing the women's 1500 winner until well after the finish. Not even a crowded bunch!

Not great, not terrible.
On paper, this trade is fine. Brown is a better player than George, but the gap is small on a per possession basis (health is a separate issue). They're both negative value contracts. George has one fewer year, but is older, and less healthy, so the Celtics pick up one good pick, and one mystery box pick for their troubles. Seems fine.
The issue with this trade is *perceived value*. Jaylen Brown is a top ~50-ish player who is widely viewed as like, a top 15 player, and the Celtics traded him without collecting any of the premium from that perception gap. That's fine, but leads to consternation obviously.
They lost a lot of perceived trade value, but as we leaned the last week, that value probably didn't really exist among team front offices. That's frustrating, but also hard for me to blame them, given I agree that Brown probably is actually closer to the 50th best guy than the 15th.
So why do it? I have no inside info, but given the Celtics behavior here, I infer that Brown had either explicitly asked for a trade, or was close to it, so the Celtics were under some pressure here to make a move.

No player in the NBA lowers the points that his teammates score, while on the court with him, more than Jaylen Brown
He lops off 4 points, per 100, from each of the 4 teammates that share the court with him

Like this is what Derrick White is paid to do. He’s one of the best guard defenders in the entire NBA he takes on hardest matchup every game. The idea Jaylen Brown does, isn’t rooted in reality.

Are we sure Fox didn’t just Terry Rozier the finals? Ain’t no way he’s actually this bad, right? 🤔🤔

This is insane. Regime change will result in a bloody civil war, killing hundreds of thousands and creating another massive Muslim refugee crisis. Topping a leader is NEVER as easy you think. It almost always results in further involvement, a civil war, and chaos. Resist this!
