The Leafy Sea Dragon (Phycodurus eques) is stunning a marine fish related to seahorses and pipefish. It is famous worldwide for its incredible camouflage, which makes it look exactly like floating seaweed.

“It was Autumn, and incessant Piped the quails from shocks and sheaves, And, like living coals, the apples Burned among the withering leaves.” — Longfellow I spend a lot of time watching these little guys scurry around our backyard feeder. Pic by N. Bright at the Sanford Ranch.

Today I issued an Executive Order designating “Seminole Wind” by John Anderson as the official anthem of Florida. I have also directed the @FLSecofState to erect historic markers in the City of Apopka depicting John Anderson’s contribution to Florida’s heritage. In addition, I have tasked @FLDEPNews to work with the @SJRWMD to designate wildlife drive and trail system within Lake Apopka North Shore as the John Anderson Wildlife Drive and Trail System.

Happy Birthday to President Roosevelt! 🥳🎂🎈
Born on October 27, 1858, Theodore Roosevelt, the 26th president of the United States, left a lasting mark on America’s public lands. During his presidency, he established five national parks, designated 18 national monuments, created 51 federal bird reservations, and protected approximately 230 million acres of public land for future generations. Today, you can celebrate his birthday by visiting a national park site for free!

Traces of Texas reader Sal Vitone saw the circa 1890 photo of the 4th Denton County courthouse that I posted a couple of days ago and graciously sent in this glorious -- and I do mean glorious --- 1902 photo of the 5th Denton County courthouse. And what a grand building it is. It still stands. Y'all may remember that the previous courthouse, built in 1877, was a pretty nice-looking building and was just fine until its tower was struck by lighting in 1894. Seriously, folks ... How great is this? Thank you, Sal. I love it!

The skies are getting crowded, and we couldn't be happier. Fall migration brings thousands of birds along the Pacific Flyway. @BLMNational's Cosumnes River Preserve, provides vital habitat for sandhill cranes, ducks and geese to rest and refuel.

Meet the fierce little queen of the bush! This female Splendid Fairywren might look tiny and fluffy, but don’t let that fool you, she’s a symbol of strength and resilience. Her soft grey plumage contrasts beautifully with that striking blue tail.

RIP, John Anderson. Easily one of the greatest of all time. I snapped this photo in Smithville, Tennessee last time I was there.
