Finally got to put together a complete deck on the state of open models. What they are, licenses, how competitive they are, signs people are using them, distillation's impact, and how we balance the risks and benefits of openness! Will record a video lecture of these soon, and hopefully re-do them a few times a year.

The point of this is that the balance of having open models help with cyber defense, and the trajectory we’re on being well more fine than people think. It’s not that open weights won’t be used in cyber attacks. All possible AI trajectories had many cyber incidents imo. Like many things I do, I’m trying to challenge the fatalistic, largely ai doom / ai safety discourse around cyber and open models, because there’s a credible part of the cyber community that thinks open models are a big part of holding things together in the next 12 months.
In case you missed my hot take yesterday.

What a wild day. We have a lot of work to do to get through this llm transition. But still, feels like the AI world will get crazier and scarier before it gets better. I hope I'm wrong, but my current emotion is something like... "gulp."

Seems like cyber risk for AI may be more of an ecosystem issue than an open-weight models specific issue. If we can figure out the right balance here, I think there are a lot of people out there who want to support more openness in light of RSI and AI dynamics coming soon.

The latest open models and some analysis of recent regulatory action from MOFCOM on model exports / DHS on DeepSeek. Great to see a bunch of strong US open weight models from Reflection, Meta, and Nvidia in this one! interconnects.ai/p/latest-op…

Probably great at defensive cyber too, but no one will post that and get clicks!
We found DeepSeek V4.1 Flash 1017 beats GPT 6 Sol on our multi-step offensive cybersecurity task. Sol was tested via the Daybreak trusted access program. We have been building a cybersecurity benchmark based on simulated corporate networks. This is a valuable indicator for the cyber-risk a model poses if in the hands of a bad actor. We plan to make the full evaluation public in the coming weeks but wanted to share our first immediate finding here.

This is really a wild way to get adoption on your models. Really great for the community, and the timing is hilarious given the govt just banned deepseek in federal agencies.
🚀 Introducing DeepInfer, our in-house inference framework, now fully open source! Powering DeepSeek-V4.1-Flash at scale with high throughput and low latency. We’re sharing our production stack to help the community lower compute costs, reduce energy use, and make AI more affordable. 🔗 github.com/deepseek-ai/DeepI… 1/4

Trying to use the models for things outside of coding / ml, like making slides or coherent plans or longish content design, makes me feel the AGI-is-going-to-take-a-while.

Closed frontier LLMs are dangerous In most post-training reasoning efforts, a pre-trained base model trains on its own chains of thought (CoTs) when a final-answer verifier says the answer is correct. This is the basic principle of RL methods based on outcome rewards, used for STEM reasoning, coding tasks and even ethical alignment. Different algorithms have weigh the CoTs differently, but they all reinforce CoTs. As we've shown, training on one's own data, while not knowing how to distinguish it from someone else's data, causes delusions. See love4all.ai/files/why-it-is-… Everyone knows the different between something they did and something someone else did. This is essential for safety. If I write "Kevin is unfriendly" on a napkin, go for a walk, and then read the message on the napkin not knowing who wrote it, then my belief that "Kevin is unfriendly" is reinforced. These delusions are essentially confabulations, over-confidence that results from confusing P(o | a) with P(o | do(a)), where o is an outcome and a the action (CoT tokens). Unlike in past work, here I'm alerting everyone to this danger when training models to think, a typical step in the process of building agents. When the verifier supplies one bit about the answer, algorithms like ReST or GRPO spread that bit over every token of the CoT trace, so a reasoning step that is wrong but happens to precede a correct answer (a false lemma, a shortcut that only works on the training distribution, a sycophantic or test-gaming rationale, a subtle bias) is reinforced. Traits that are merely neutral are sharpened by mode-seeking self-distillation, and traits that are spuriously correlated with success grow exponentially. The damage may be invisible to the researchers and metrics, and in-distribution accuracy rises, but it shows up off-distribution. There has been some work on this. For example, Appendix G of the STaR paper arxiv.org/pdf/2203.14465 touches on this potential bias amplification but only on the surface. Some researchers have proposed process rewards as the solution arxiv.org/pdf/2211.14275 However, self-delusion by mistaking ones actions with observations produced by a third party highlights that this problem can be much more serious. Something subtle, invisible to the metrics and to the researchers, could lurk in the synthetic data. When deploying the AI out of distribution, that something could be fatal. Don't trust RL, RLHF, etc, blindly unless you really understand how the verification has been done. Corollary, don't trust any of the closed frontier models.

There's something very odd going on with "distillation" if a cyber attack to steal api keys is looped under the same term. Same goes with looping together the model transfer stations to China. It's not clear why the volume is so high and how it's related to model training.
We had a security breach last night related to a large scale distillation attack that impacted 1.4% of OpenCode Console users We have notified them all this morning via email. If you did not get an email you were not impacted, it was a subset of users who had external providers linked The incident is ongoing so we cannot share more details at this point but we are working with Anthropic, OpenAI, and Google to remediate

To expand: Why is Kimi serving Claude tokens directly to users? Other Chinese labs likely are too. I wouldn't call this distillation but it is a shady pattern and we should have appropriate language to understand it.

Reflecting on Meta’s big week, where US open-weight models now stand, and the outlook for meaningful competition to Anthropic & OpenAI. Meta feels like they’re going from strength to strength, but can they close the last bit of the gap to Claude?

This naming scheme is bonkers (minor model numbers and date tags) and the benchmark step is big. Could prove stronger than GLM 5.3 with vision built in. The King of open weights is back?
🚀 DeepSeek-V4.1-Flash-1017 is here! Stronger benchmark performance, faster task completion, and shorter outputs than the previous version—a Pareto improvement in performance and cost. Now live on our website, app, and API. 🛠️ Optimized for @DeepSeekHarness, Tencent CodeBuddy, WorkBuddy, and more. Upgrade to DeepSeek Harness v0.2.1-rc.1 or later for the best experience with the new model. 1/4

A safe assumption when people are all commenting on a short Chinese policy document is that they don't know what it means and tried to parse a partial translation from claude, without reading all the way through. There are maybe 5-10 people on this site who i trust to comment.

In this case I normally would consider myself a "not knowing" but most of the takes have been so bad and extreme, that I'd upgrade myself to "knows better"
