My favourite chart from the @IEA special report on electrification. Electricity is only 23% of Final Energy (No big deal), but it's 37% of Useful Energy (What?) and delivers 46% of GDP (Wow!) And it's going clean, fast. Still think there's no transition? iea.blob.core.windows.net/as…

Good morning with good news: In 6 of 9 EU countries, EV trucks are now cheaper! In Holland, Germany & Denmark, savings can be €100,000, €85,000 & €69,000 respectively in 5 years. EV trucks there pay off after 2 years. Trucks are ~20% of oil demand. uploads.transportenvironment…

Electricity Already Powers More of the World Than Oil >While electricity is now 23% of final energy, combustion engines and boilers waste massive heat >Because EVs, motors, and heat pumps waste far less, electricity already delivers 40% of the world’s useful energy, providing more actual energy and work than oil! Count the energy that actually does work: Electricity powers 45% of global GDP Electrification is unstoppable Wires chewing pipelines iea.org/reports/electrificat…

Electricity is 23% of global final energy but delivers 37% of useful energy and powers 46% of the global economy. We don't need to replace all fossil fuels. We need to replace the services. A much smaller task. Great to see @IEA Electrification report finally measure this.

€ (v. a. Brennstoff & CO₂).

The strong correlation between increasing WindWaterSolar penetrations and lower electricity prices in the U.S. is not due to random chance. Multiple statistically-significant regression lines indicate that, above 10% WWS supply relative to grid + behind-the-meter demand, the correlation between more WWS and lower residential retail prices is not random. Results are also significant when all WWS penetrations <35% are compared with penetrations above 35%. @jillgferguson
Promising new @EIAgov data for 1st half of 2026: WindWaterSolar is surging in the U.S. and keeping electricity prices lower in states with lots of WWS than in states with little WWS 27.1% of all grid+BTM U.S. electricity demand from Aug 1, 2025-Jun 30, 2026 was met with WWS (versus 24.7% the prior year). If this rate of growth and demand stays constant, U.S. electricity will be supplied by 100% WWS by 2056. WWS met 127.3% of demand in South Dakota and 115.4% of demand in Montana (versus 124.6% and 99.1% in the prior year) WWS met 51-127% of demand in 13 states. web.stanford.edu/group/efmh/… Of the 16 states with 38-127% WWS, 14 had electricity prices 2-5.5 c/kWh below the U.S. average.

Commenting on a report commissioned by the Conservatives from Onward, which backs dropping 'net zero dogma' by prioritising 'cheap power', Jess Ralston, Head of Energy at the Energy and Climate Intelligence Unit (ECIU), said: "It's obvious that the North Sea is not a long term source of energy security with around 90% of its oil and gas already extracted, so building more gas plants just makes us more reliant on gas imports from the likes of the Strait of Hormuz and US. Polling shows British people aren’t happy relying on Trump for gas, with imports from the US already having risen around 40% last year. Gas prices today are near a three year high, as conflicts caused by actors like Putin and Trump dictate those costs, not UK supply." "Nuclear can play a role, but so far large plants have been delayed and over budget. Small modular reactors have been touted for many years, but none are currently operating in the western world. The extreme heat and drought have forced nuclear plants across France, Romania and Hungary to switch off, a reminder that no energy source is completely ‘firm’. "With household interest in net zero tech like solar, electric vehicles and heat pumps soaring as a result of energy instability resulting from war in Middle East, the public clearly see electrifying as a way to take back control of bills. Cheaper power would help boost that further, reducing our oil and gas demand and so our vulnerability to the next energy crisis, but there's no guarantee that nuclear or gas would deliver cost reductions while we know that renewables lowered the wholesale price of electricity by a third last year." eciu.net/media/press-release…

“If Hinkley C had been completed, on schedule and within budget, we would still be paying them twice as much for electricity as for onshore wind, and a new gas plant would produce electricity at even higher cost than Hinkley. It is a myth that gas is cheaper than renewables. One big gas price spike from a war or other major disruption costs Britain more than the entire Net Zero project. We saw the economic risk of dependence on fossil fuels when the wars in Ukraine and Iran sent energy bills skyrocketing. When a political party that receives lots of fossil fuel money says you should switch from the cheapest electricity sources to the most expensive, exercise caution. When they claim huge overall savings, best wait until some independent experts have a look before you start celebrating the mathematical miracle.” greenpeace.org.uk/press-cent…

Solar is about to overtake wind. Generation is set to rise ~600 TWh in 2026, matching last year's record, putting it second only to hydro among renewables. And renewables together are on track to out-generate coal this year.

2018 was near peak mansplaining by anti-RE folks why solar, wind and batteries would not add up to much. EIA in 2018 projected that in 2050: large solar would be ~170 GW; wind ~140 GW; batteries 40 GW. In July 2026, large solar was 171 GW; wind 166 GW; batteries 53 GW
