New @KinotesPodcast up! Part I examining THE RINGS OF POWER music of @bearmccreary in comparison to Howard Shore’s work on the movies.
It’s been a minute (and a half!), but we’re back with Part I of a special two-part series looking at the music of THE RINGS OF POWER TV show side-by-side with the score for THE LORD OF THE RINGS movie trilogy.

One disorienting aspect of reading Homer is how murder is a matter for private blood feuds and not a public crime, so several characters show up and openly say "I murdered a man and had to flee, I'd like to settle here" and everyone goes "Of course, stranger, welcome, welcome".
Lots of fools right now nakedly revealing they have a fool’s understanding of drama
And therein lies the issue, @holland_tom! Think about how you ended your post:
"It honours Homer while simultaneously making something new of him (The Odyssey)."
Let's play this out and see if you can recognize the inherent fallacy in such a statement.
It honours Shakespeare while simultaneously making something new of Hamlet.
It honours Dante Alighieri while simultaneously making something new of The Divine Comedy.
It honours Jane Austen while simultaneously making something new of Pride & Prejudice.
There is a reason why Peter Jackson's masterful trilogy, the Lord of the Rings did so well and continues to be revered and held as one of the greatest cinematic achievements of all time. Just go back and listen to the interviews he gave. They wanted to stay true to the source material and that is why it succeeded. They were not pretending the work was written yesterday. They honored the work and the history and the lineage and the fan base by staying true to the text. Conversely, the Rings of Power are almost not worthy of mentioning in the same sentence.
The moment we believe we can improve a work that has stood for thousands of years by simply injecting woke/DEI filters, you have already failed.
And, I say that with much sadness because Christopher Nolan has been one of my all-time favorite directors and there has not been a movie of his I have not loved. Part of the reason I love him is he never panders to his audience and had always demanded authenticity -- until now.

.@elonmusk says that no one can name a person who died from his aid cuts. In fact, I've met the kids who are dying, and I've talked to the families who lost children. In my columns, I've cited many, many names of people who have died because of Musk's aid cuts. A few examples:
*Yamah Freeman was a 23-year-old woman who died in childbirth because Musk cut funding for the diesel for ambulances in her part of Liberia. She couldn't get to a hospital and died as people were carrying her there. I talked to her parents and sister in their village.
*Gbessey Kiadu, age 1, died of malaria because of his cuts to malaria medication in Liberia. I talked to his mom in her village.
*Ibrahim Koroma, an infant, died of AIDS in Sierra Leone after he interrupted HIV supplies. I talked to health workers who cared for him.
*Achol Deng was an 8-year-old girl with HIV in South Sudan who died when Musk cut funding for the health care worker who provided her medicines. I talked to the healthcare workers.
I could go on and on. In almost every village you go to in South Sudan, Uganda, Liberia, Sierra Leone or other countries I reported in, you find people dying because of aid cuts. I challenge Musk: Come with me on a reporting trip, and we'll talk to these moms and dads, and you'll see the dying children themselves. I think if you see the kids whose lives are at stake, maybe you'll change your mind.

The federal government claims it was looking for Lue Moua when ICE agents arrested a U.S. citizen at his St. Paul home and led him outside in his underwear. Minnesota Department of Corrections records show Moua has been at the Faribault prison since 2024. kstp.com/kstp-news/top-news/…

Recall the antebellum struggle over slavery in the nation’s capital 25 years before the Civil War, in which the free people of color and white abolitionists injected the anti-slavery agenda into national politics over the violent objections of Francis Scott Key and the (proto-Trump) Jacksonian majority.

Frankenstein is magnificent, a masterpiece. probably the truest adaption of Shelley’s novel, in soul if not in every detail.
One curious question for @RealGDT: if the lab’s near Vaduz (Liechtenstein) why are there soldiers’ skeletons & artillery from Crimea in the woods nearby?
