Vietnam Red Night Vision and Demons Myth You may have heard the urban legend of early or experimental “red” night vision goggles used in Vietnam allowing users to see interdimensional beings like ghosts or demons. The following is one account of the urban legend given by the Coast to Coast AM radio show of July 8, 2023 with guest Mark Anthony: "…the United States designed and built red night vision goggles. The theory was red night vision goggles would allow soldiers' eyes to maintain daylight sensitivities and more easily switch from day to night vision because red light does not force the eye to adapt to low light conditions…. Red light also stimulates the brain's neurons to increase reflex time and spatial awareness, he added. The new goggles were issued to mostly airborne troops in 1965, and the whole bizarre episode took place over about 60 days... A week after the soldiers were issued the red night vision goggles, their behavior began to change. ‘The men started acting strangely, they started talking about things that nobody else could see... they were fixated at staring at treetops, then they started having discipline problems and actually began fighting among themselves.’ According to Anthony, a pivotal incident happened during a helicopter patrol over a relatively peaceful area of Vietnam when a gunner wearing the red night vision goggles opened fire at something at the same altitude as the chopper. ‘The gunner cried out he was shooting at demons, he kept screaming demons,’ Anthony reported, noting the gunner described the beings as horrible-looking, with horns, and flying toward the chopper. Officers and pilots had been ordered not to wear the red night vision goggles, but an officer aboard the helicopter ordered the gunner to remove his goggles and then put them on himself. ‘He saw several grotesque winged humanoid creatures flying up from the treetops below toward the helicopter,’…. This was not an isolated event. ‘For weeks, reports kept coming in about flying monsters spotted by soldiers who wore the red night vision goggles,’… Officers who disobeyed their orders and wore the red night vision goggles described seeing gargoyles or demons, and anyone who wore them indicated the creatures would come after them as soon as they saw them, he noted. Use of the red night vision goggles was abruptly canceled after 60 days. Soldiers who had worn the goggles were mentally unstable for months after the experience, Anthony revealed, adding the military has since switched to green light night vision goggles." Bought vials online marked "research use only"? There's a new route now. Two weeks ago I asked the FDA, which is it? Now there's an answer. HHS says it won't go after state-licensed pharmacies that compound six of these products, as long as a licensed prescriber writes the prescription for one specific patient. The policy lands in the Federal Register today. This isn't the FDA signing off on anything. It's a temporary, non-binding policy. HHS is choosing not to act against these pharmacies while the FDA works on a permanent rule for each product, and HHS can reverse course if safety problems turn up. It comes with strings. The ingredient has to be made by a manufacturer registered with the FDA, with paperwork proving it was tested. One active ingredient per product, so no blends. The label has to say compounded and not for resale. Every serious side effect gets reported to the FDA. So the path HHS is leaving open runs through a prescriber and a state-licensed pharmacy. Not an overseas package from a site that sells lab gear on the side. It won't show up everywhere at once. Each pharmacy needs a supplier that clears those standards first. Then keep an eye on price. When a hyped product moves to prescription and cash-pay, the hype tax shows up fast. Done right, you should be paying for the ingredient, the testing and the work of making it. Nobody in between adding their cut. That's how we price everything. forestparkpharmacy.com, check the price checker, transfer today to save. See ya.

For thirty-one years, the classified files of the Cold War hid what happened on June 29, 1987, when America's fastest spy plane blew an engine at Mach 3 over the Baltic Sea. U.S. Air Force Lieutenant Colonels Duane Noll and Tom Veltri were flying a Lockheed SR-71 Blackbird at seventy-five thousand feet near Soviet airspace when their right engine exploded. In seconds, the crippled American reconnaissance jet decelerated and dropped down to twenty-two thousand feet on a single engine. An SR-71 carries zero weapons and relies entirely on speed to survive. Now flying slow and low, the unarmed American crew was a sitting duck as Soviet fighter jets scrambled with orders to intercept or force the Blackbird down. Then two Swedish Air Force JA 37 Viggen fighter jets piloted by Major Roger Moller and Major Krister Sjoberg thundered up beside the limping American plane, followed minutes later by two more armed Swedish Viggens. Sweden was officially neutral, and those four pilots were only on a routine training flight. Yet without hesitation, they locked their own combat radars on and positioned their fighter jets as an armed shield right between the Soviet interceptors and the crippled U.S. aircraft, escorting the Americans all the way to safety. In November 2018, the secret was finally declassified, and the United States Air Force awarded all four Swedish pilots the U.S. Air Medal.

Glycine + NAC for aging (fascinating study) A placebo-controlled trial PMID: 35975308 showed: 16 weeks of glycine + NAC (100mg/kg of each a day, about 7g each for a 70kg person) pushed almost every aging marker measured back toward young adult levels. The placebo group didn't move. oxidative stress (F2-isoprostanes) -> down 72%, back to the level of the young adults IL-6 -> down 78% TNF-alpha -> down 54% hsCRP -> down 41% insulin resistance (HOMA-IR) -> 10.8 to 3.9 walking speed -> 1.13 to 1.34 m/s, same as the young adults grip strength -> up 4kg in both hands systolic blood pressure -> 132 to 124 waist -> down 3cm Why it works: glycine and NAC are the two raw materials for glutathione, the body's main antioxidant. Older adults can't make enough of it. Give the body the parts and it makes its own. No side effects reported.

Last Friday, I took my fifty eight year old boss, Director Sato, to an American sports bar in Yokosuka. I ordered a basket of traditional Buffalo Wings and two draft beers. When the plate arrived, Director Sato put on his reading glasses and leaned over the table. He stared at the small, orange pieces of meat for a long time. "Wait," Director Sato said quietly. "Yes, sir?" I asked. "A buffalo is a giant American cow that weighs two thousand pounds," he said. "Why are its wings the size of my thumb?" I nearly choked on my beer. "Sir," I said. "Buffaloes cannot fly. These are chicken wings." Director Sato frowned deeply. "Then why did the menu say Buffalo Wings?" "They were invented in a city called Buffalo, in New York," I explained. He processed this information in complete silence. Inside I said: HIS BRAIN IS REWRITING AMERICAN GEOGRAPHY. "I see," he said, nodding slowly. "In Japan, we have Kobe beef. In America, they have Buffalo chicken. It is a regional title of honor." He picked up a wing, dipped it into the white cup of blue cheese dressing, and took a bite. His eyes lit up. Then the cayenne pepper hit his throat. He coughed once, grabbed a raw celery stick like a lifeline, and chewed it furiously. "The spicy sauce attacks you," he gasped, "and the green vegetable saves your life. This is a brilliantly balanced ecosystem." I want to be accurate here: he ate twelve wings by himself, sweating through his suit jacket. At 8:30 PM, he raised his hand toward the American bartender and shouted with complete confidence: "Excuse me! One more plate of the flying cow, please!"

AI may well be able to write massive software projects “from scratch”, but that almost certainly isn’t the fastest / highest performance / highest security / most token efficient way to do things. Good building blocks matter. In addition to RL’ing the agents on final task loss, we should try to get them to regularize the building blocks as well. What would the standard library look like that makes the agents most effective? It is likely at the limit that it turns out to be some alien organization of code, but given the existing human-bias in training, I bet that in the near term it would be lovely code that old programmers would appreciate. I suspect the same could be said for mathematics, but that is out of my lane.

USA. Six-thirty in the morning at a roadside hotel in Texas. The sign said FREE CONTINENTAL BREAKFAST. Inside the dining room, six strangers stood in a silent single-file line before a heavy cast-iron machine mounted on a pivot. A trucker in mud-stained boots. A businessman in a necktie. A grandmother in a bathrobe. A ten-year-old girl in pajamas. There was no chef in the room. In America, at dawn, every citizen becomes his own blacksmith. The ritual is strict and unforgiving. You fill one white plastic cup with liquid batter from a spigot, pour it into the glowing iron jaws, close the lid, and rotate the entire furnace one hundred and eighty degrees by hand. Then you stand at attention for exactly two minutes while a red light watches your soul. Nobody checks their phone. Nobody speaks. Everyone watches the man at the iron to see if he is worthy. When my turn arrived, my palms were sweating. If you pour too much batter, the iron weeps white liquid onto the counter in front of the entire village. If you flip it too slow, the waffle is born pale and dishonored. I poured the cup. I closed the jaws. I hesitated at the handle. Behind me, the trucker in the mud-stained boots spoke in a low, steady voice. "Flip her now, chief. Commit to the turn." I committed to the turn. Two minutes later, the green light flashed and the machine emitted a shrill battle cry. I lifted the iron lid. The waffle was not round. It was forged in the exact geographic shape of the State of Texas. Even at six in the morning, their carbohydrates refuse to surrender their borders. I stepped aside so the ten-year-old girl in pajamas could take the anvil. She had to stand on her tiptoes to reach the handle. When her timer beeped and she opened the iron, she had forgotten the non-stick spray. Her waffle tore straight down the middle, leaving half of West Texas welded to the upper plate. Her lower lip trembled. She looked down at the torn pieces on her paper plate. Before I could move, the trucker stepped forward. Without a word, he slid his own pristine, golden, unbroken State of Texas off his plate and placed it onto hers. Then he scraped her torn pieces onto his own plate and buried them in maple syrup. "Don't sweat it, kiddo," he said, winking at her. "I only eat the crispy Panhandle anyway." The little girl beamed and ran back to her mother's table holding Texas in both hands. I have eaten breakfast in five-star hotels in Tokyo. None of them ever served a state that knew how to take care of its smallest citizen.

My wife is a traditional Japanese cook. She wakes up early to make broth from kelp and dried fish. To her, flavor is a delicate art. Last week, my American friend Mike gave me a plastic bottle of Hidden Valley Ranch dressing. I put it on our dining table in Yokohama. My wife picked it up and read the label. "What is this white liquid?" she asked. I explained that in America, people put Ranch on salads, chicken wings, french fries, and even pizza. She looked horrified. "On pizza?" she said. "Why do they want everything to taste like creamy garlic? That destroys the harmony of the ingredients." On Friday night, I made fried chicken. I poured a small pool of Ranch onto a side plate. "Just try one piece," I said. She sighed, picked up a piece of chicken with her chopsticks, and touched the very tip of it into the white sauce. Approximately two millimeters. She took a bite. She stopped chewing. Inside I said: THE BROTH HAS FALLEN. She looked at the chicken. Then she looked at the plastic bottle. "Give me that," she said quietly. I want to be accurate here: she dipped the next piece until it was completely submerged. We did not speak for the rest of dinner. America, my household has surrendered. Last night at 11:30 PM, I walked into a dark kitchen to get water and caught my wife dipping cold pizza crusts directly into the Ranch bottle.
