In the Cambridge, Merriam-Webster, and Britannica dictionaries, as well as Dictionary.com, “American” as a noun has a definition meaning someone from the United States. ESLs need to start using English dictionaries, we have them for a reason. Yes there is also often a definition meaning “anyone from the Americas” but that is simply a different definition of the word and doesn’t negate the fact that the English word for a U.S. national is “American”.
