Big personal news today: I have decided to leave @a16z, move to SF, and start a company. It's time to build :) It has been almost 10 years since I joined the firm. I met @cdixon, @bhorowitz, and @pmarca in 2017. At the time, I was an engineer at Google Brain working on robotics. I had a deep interest in open source. I knew nothing about investing. Chris meanwhile had already planted the @a16z flag at the frontier that was early crypto with investments in companies like Coinbase. But the crypto team at the firm consisted of only him, and he had the ambition to expand. His pitch to me was simple: "You should leave Google and come help me build the crypto vertical at the firm." The work we've done together since then to build out our team and support our founders has been the most meaningful work of my life. I am grateful to have spent a decade working with everyone here, supporting our founders, learning from Chris, Ben, and Marc, and living the firm's culture. It is a culture that values integrity, life-long working relationships, and the belief that we humans have the power to build our own future. Marc and Ben have built a16z into an incredible force for good in the world. Before I joined the firm, I always thought that my inevitable path was to become a founder. The truth is that I wasn't ready for it then. Somehow, this year I've gotten the overwhelming feeling that this has changed. As for what I want to build: It is early, but I care most about building infrastructure that enables open software ecosystems. I am starting with two core observations: 1. AI today is largely a single-player technology. Most uses involve one human talking with one agent in isolation from the rest of the world. That will soon change. Most uses of AI will soon be many-to-many: many humans and many agents working together. There will be at least one massive open network on top of which those uses will be built. 2. Software is now free. It can now be written just-in-time, on the spot for a single individual's hyper-targeted use case, and it can even be thrown out after a single use. This means that our entire software stack will have to change. In the limit, it will lead to a whole new kind of AI-mediated operating systems, which in turn will create an ecosystem of AI-native developers who build applications that actively rebuild themselves on the fly. If you are working on related ideas, and especially if you are in the Bay Area, hit me up. Let's chat! @bhorowitz , @pmarca, @cdixon, @eddylazzarin, @guywuolletjr, @jasonrosenthal , and our whole team — I want to thank you. Working with you has been the time of a lifetime. I am forever an a16z superfan and your ally. Onward 🫡

I just had a 1.5-hour conversation with mah new San Francisco-Australian bro from another mother & father: Me: "You have kids, bro?" X: "Yeah, I've got two." Me: "How old are they?" X: "One of them is the same age as you, bro."

I think @X & @LinkedIn are the most valuable social media in terms of knowledge, connections, and deals.

fyi: @opencode is under continuous attack.
they've been non stop trying to attack our systems for the past 48 hours a side effect is everything is getting hardened but damn we basically need agents going 24/7 because that's what they have

If everyone hasn't realized by now - building startups is just the new age version of war and nationbuilding: Entering new markets = taking new land Competition = warring countries Compounding moats = building competitive advantage Strategy = how will you outmaneuver the competition

We need more melody-making in storytelling. How can something so utterly simple – like the melody of Coldplay's Yellow – enrapture our minds that we'll forever remember and stir something emotionally within us? My piano professor told me, those who can create great melodies might as well be magicians. Almost nobody teaches how to construct a simple, but beautiful melody. Too much of musical teaching is focused on harmony. They implicitly say, "the more complex, the better." Sure, you can reverse-engineer a great melody. This interval here, this interval there, pause on this note, etc. But that's missing the point. Melodies are created from the depth of the human experience, artistic yearning expressed outward into a string of notes that we hold emotional attachment to. I can't help but think about this in relation to tech storytelling. We can get all tacky and say we should do x, y, z – another system, another playbook, another sophisticated way to reel in more customers. That's also missing the point. The goal is to strip all of it away and fully internalize: Who are you serving? What do you believe in? Why should people care? Why should you fight day and night to make this possible? Melody-making first. The rest will piece together as a result.

Amazon banning agents is the first opportunity I've seen since Amazon was founded for a startup to create an Amazon competitor. People will want agents to buy stuff for them. It will be one of the main use cases. And they won't want to use some Amazon-supplied agent to do it.

Head of Product, YouTube
🚨 MAJOR ANNOUNCEMENT: YouTube will start prioritizing original content and reducing re-uploads (RIP clipping) YouTube has just announced one of the most impactful changes to its short-form algorithm. Its recommendation systems (the algorithm) will start to further prioritize original content and reduce the reach of content re-uploaded from other creators without adding anything of your own. They highlight this shift toward originality, where channels with primarily re-uploaded content will see less distribution within the Shorts feed. It also seems like they’re really trying to put the focus on content with real value, while highlighting that YouTube doesn’t want as many “minor technical edits” or “template-based” changes. Which is basically all that clipping was in this industry. Overall, while this will piss off some people whose entire careers were built on the premise of other people’s content (mostly clippers), the change itself is amazing and will finally address the overall quality issue we’ve been seeing.
