BREAKING: Stock markets in 7 places are breaking at the same time. This is what 2008 looked like in week 1. A few markets. A few red days. Nobody called it a crisis. 1/ Japan: the Nikkei fell 5.8% today. It is now 20% below its high. Officially a bear market. 2/ South Korea: the KOSPI fell 5.3% yesterday and 4.6% more today. It is down 44% from its 2026 high. 3/ Taiwan: down 4.5% today, 20% below its high. The island that makes the world's AI chips is in a bear market. 4/ Europe: the main index sits 1% under its record. Under it, sector after sector is breaking. Chip makers Infineon and STMicro -48%. Luxury houses -36% to -41%. Carmakers -31% to -62%. Defence giant Rheinmetall fell 16% in one day. 5/ Crypto: Bitcoin is at $75,482. 30% below its high. 6/ Big Tech: Nvidia -24% from its high. Meta -22%. Alphabet -30%. Oracle -54%. All in bear market territory. 7/ USA: the Nasdaq 100 fell 6.4% yesterday, its WORST day since the COVID crash. Chip stocks fell 12% in one session. The S&P 500 has lost more than $4 trillion since early October. Now zoom out. In 2020 the world printed money to stop the COVID crash. The Fed's balance sheet went from $4.2 trillion to about $9 trillion. Stocks went from record to record. Then prices never cooled. US inflation is 3.7%. Europe is at 4%. The Iran war pushed oil up 64% this year. So rates are going UP again. The Fed raised in September. Australia raised this week. The ECB raised twice this year. And the AI giants are spending up to $828 billion this year. 4 of the 5 biggest spenders burned more cash than they made last quarter. In 2020 the money printer delayed the crash. Nobody is calling this a crisis yet. But central bankers already plan for the day prices stay high. They are still raising rates into the fall. The Bank of England raised rates yesterday, its first hike since 2023. The Richmond Fed president said the Fed "will have to raise interest rates further." You gonna regret now following me.

Annual spending on US data center construction reached a record $96.5B in September, up 90% in a year. That’s ~2.1x the rate for office construction. Over the same period, US private construction overall fell ~4%.

The Taiwan line at 220% of GDP is mostly price, not flow, I'd suggest. When market caps double on an AI re-rating, this ratio moves without a single net inflow. The pullback at the end rather confirms it.

All the supply:demand indicators show Japan's labour market v tight. Wage data aren't so consistent. Headline wage growth is 4% YoY, which is robust. But another cut of the same data show wages rising 3%. That's reasonably high, but not necessarily accelerating.

Taiwan – inflation still over 2% CPI is being affected by cross-currents including very high upstream price inflation, government subsidies and holidays. The underlying picture is inflation of around 2%, which by Taiwan standards is high. I think an economic slowdown is needed to prevent it moving higher. eastasiaecon.com/tw-cpi-nov-…
