About this H5N1 mink farm in Utah. It is REALLY dangerous to let bird flu spread unchecked through mammals, especially minks, which have similar susceptibility & respiratory physiology to humans. The virus can adapt to human hosts by adapting to the respiratory tract of minks.

This is exactly the scenario that @DrFiliatrault, @TRyanGregory and I warned about in a Scientific American article last summer: scientificamerican.com/artic… We weren’t the only ones. This is such a predictable disaster unfolding in slow motion.
There is something really concerning (and disappointing) going on in the US right now. A dangerous and preventable situation. Let me explain. nextstrain.org/avian-flu/h5n… 1/

In 1944, an 18 year old American Marine walked into Japanese territory almost entirely alone. He was just 5 feet 4 inches tall, spoke imperfect Japanese, and carried a weapon the enemy never expected: the language he'd learned growing up in Los Angeles. On one extraordinary day, he persuaded roughly 800 Japanese to surrender. This is the story of Guy Gabaldon.. 🧵1/5

For all of you who believe GLP-1s don't target the root cause of obesity. That would be the food environment, and the eating habits of GLP-1 users are forcing Big Food to reformulation. More protein, fiber, & nutrients. Fewer calories & sugar. foodinstitute.com/consumerin…

A reminder that the Trump administration canceled a contract for an mRNA H5N1 vaccine in favor of pursuing an older technology that is not likely to work. Explanatory articles from the late, missed Helen Branswell: statnews.com/2025/08/11/mrna… and statnews.com/2025/05/03/nih-…

1/ I’ve seen people on X claim that “mRNA has no place in the human body.” That’s an extraordinary misunderstanding of one of the most fundamental processes in biology. Your body produces messenger RNA (mRNA) continuously. It has been doing so since the earliest stages of your development. DNA contains the genetic instructions for making proteins. mRNA carries copies of those instructions to ribosomes, the cellular machinery that assembles proteins. Those proteins include enzymes that regulate metabolism, receptors that allow cells to communicate, structural components of muscle, and molecules essential to immune function. Without mRNA, your cells couldn’t manufacture the proteins required to maintain themselves. This isn’t some recent discovery associated with COVID vaccines. It’s foundational molecular biology, established decades before mRNA vaccines existed.

The EPA archive has historically been a resource for climate researchers and policymakers and "a tool for 'democratic oversight.'" That, of course, is totally at odds with the priorities of this administration. 🙄😠
In a little-noticed webpage update, the Environmental Protection Agency has announced a plan to decommission its online web archive at the end of the year, a move that would wipe tens of thousands of publicly available environmental resources from the web. motherjones.com/environment/…

H5N1 has crossed from birds into dairy cattle, established sustained transmission, and begun adapting to a new mammalian host. What can the virus’s genome tell us about how this happened—and what it might mean for human health? Using Nextstrain’s genomic surveillance data, this short thread explores what we know, what remains uncertain, and why monitoring viral evolution matters. 🧵👇

Spiders eat more meat every year than the entire human race. A 2017 study in The Science of Nature put the annual kill of the world's spiders at 400 to 800 million metric tons of prey. Humans eat around 400 million tons of meat and fish a year. Whales take an estimated 280 to 500 million tons. Spiders are in that league, and at the upper end of the estimate they are ahead of everyone. More than 90% of what they catch is insects and springtails. The arithmetic behind that number is the part worth sitting with. All the spiders on earth come to roughly 25 million tons of biomass, a small fraction of what they consume, because each one eats many times its own weight over a year and there are an extraordinary number of them. Grassland and forest floor can support up to 1,000 spiders per square meter. More than 45,000 species have been described, living on every continent except Antarctica. What that adds up to is pest control running continuously, everywhere, at no cost to anyone. A large share of what spiders eat is exactly what would otherwise be eating crops, spreading disease, or getting into a house. The same logic that makes bats worth roughly $23 billion a year to American agriculture applies here, at a scale nobody has fully priced. None of this requires liking them. The overwhelming majority of spiders in North America cannot meaningfully hurt a person, and the one in the corner of a basement is working. Killing a house spider removes something that was eating mosquitoes and silverfish, and replaces it with nothing. A garden with spiders in it is a garden with fewer things eating the garden.

These two mice are the exact same age, the human equivalent of 85. The mouse on the right was given an antibody blocking a single inflammatory protein (IL-11) starting in late middle age. Starting treatment at human-equivalent age 55: - Extended median lifespan by 25% in both males and females - Prevented grey hair, frailty, and muscle wasting - Cut late-life cancer deaths in half Three anti IL-11 antibodies (that might extend human lifespan) are already in human clinical trials right now.
