this is why we always say iwtvl fandom has inherent racism problem. louis literally tried/considered to k*ll himself multiple times, self-harmed multiple times, he went through both ends of binge-eating and self-starving spectrum. everyone around him knows, yet it's "invisible"?

people on twitter invent such insane philosophies. like what? no one is born any way, we all become. my god de beauvoir had this figured out

Boys will never see themselves in. Female protagonist because women write them the same way they write men. The problem is women have value at birth, men must earn it. Everyone realizes this as natural order, so the female books just never land home.

So, Terry Pratchett was once asked what books aspiring fantasy novelists should read if they hope to write great fiction. His advice was telling. He encouraged authors to avoid reading much of what passes for contemporary fantasy (what he called “Extruded Fantasy Product,” derivative of Tolkien). “Do not write it,” he said, “and try not to read it. Read widely outside the genre. Read about the Old West (a fantasy in itself) or Georgian London or how Nelson’s navy was victualled or the history of alchemy or clock-making or the mail coach system. Read with the mindset of a carpenter looking at trees.”
Any great fantasy series you can name, from Star Wars to Narnia to Discworld, was written by authors who read voraciously, who read old books and loved old myths, whose minds were so steeped in history and folklore and obscure pulp fiction that they couldn’t have written derivative works if they had tried. We’ll only have great fantasy in this century if we can recover the reading habits of the authors of a previous era.
Hayao Miyazaki on modern anime, via Roland Kelts the author of 'Japanamerica'
"Hayao Miyazaki said to me at one point: 'The problem with young anime artists today is that the only thing they study is anime. When we were young, we studied French literature, we studied impressionism, we read Dostoevsky. We swallowed everything. And then we went and created original anime. But if you grow up and all you watch is anime, you're just regurgitating spinning wheels.'"
He also spoke about his work on the upcoming documentary 'Tezuka! God of Manga'

As a teacher, I find it fascinating the way that girls outperforming boys in tests or specific subjects (like mine, literature) is so frequently attributed to the teaching or texts themselves favouring girls. People seem desperate to be reassured that boys ARE cleverer, really.

im sure ive said this before but when i worked in a bookshop i never saw a single woman or girl put off by a book with a male protagonist or author, but had countless men/boys immediately lose interest on finding out a book was by/about a woman

I know I'm supposed to read it left to right because it's an English comic but I read it the other way instinctually and that made it so much funnier

Very understandable thread. Frankly WHA has one of the biggest divides between the fandom and the work it's actually about that I've seen in some time. People want it to be a comfy cottagecore found family when it's really none of those things.

I was a reader as a kid, the kind of reader you can't stop. I could find books anywhere, I'd read anything. I hated romance and once read about 50 Harlequin "novels" on vacation because it's all they had. If a kid wants to read they won't stop.
It's not a lack of books.

I saw someone say Scholastic didn't publish books targeting boys, and a 2-second search of their site led me to categories like "Video Game Books," "Minecraft Books," "Sports Books," "Books About Cars, Trucks & More" etc., all with tons of titles clearly aimed at boys.

I witness with my eyes that female teachers get harassed by boys solely for being female and that's what you focus on. do you want them to go full on a power trip on kids or even use violence? they're helpless because what they do works for female students perfectly. they cannot

i don't know, man, i work college prep/test readiness as community service and a lot of these boys think reading for pleasure is gay no matter who the protagonist or what the genre

Does this debate about "there are no books for boys" boil down to books with male protagonists?
Because I'm old enough to remember when girls were underserved.
The thinking *used* to be that girls would read the Hardy Boys but boys wouldn't read Nancy Drew. Because cooties.
