Cayley on Illich on the Problem of Man "I have more and more learned to recognize that even very careful and traditional use of words does not allow me to bespeak the precepts my grandfather knew, because they aren't there anymore" - Ivan Illich davidcayley.com/blog/2019/1/…

the world where I debate with my friends philosophy and politics doesn’t exist anymore this venue is a LARP, a reenactment of that vanished world

Books should simply be assigned in matched pairs. Pride and Prejudice + Master and Commander. The Aeneid + Lavinia. You’re welcome school administrators, please send your royalty checks to my DMs
It’s not about if boys want to read Hatchet. First of all, school reading lists are dominated by male authors and protagonists. Second of all, it’s the presenting books in a gendered binary that is the problem. Maybe your son could stand to read some romantasy idk!!!!

he has a lot of strange quotes like this another one from the same interview: love thy neighbor *at scale* you cannot actually love your neighbor at scale though—your neighbor is a specific person, and your relationship specific, and your love specific to the person
“An incarnational politics would take seriously the idea that every person is God” ❤️‍🔥❤️‍🔥❤️‍🔥

your neighbor is someone you encounter, personally—someone you turn towards, personally, to love your neighbor at scale is not this, cannot be this anymore

it’s been a while since a new model came out; the models we have are enough to turn whole industries upside down in the last 6 months now this

at some point the semantic arbitrage must end, and great things will be considered great again by those who occupy the heights of culture but, like the stock market, the arbitrage can last a long time
This is how far The New Yorker, once the absolute pinnacle of non-fiction prose, has fallen. From recent article on microchips: "There are a handful of truly monumental collective achievements in our history: Machu Picchu, the Great Wall of China, the Pyramids of Giza, and perhaps, if we’re being generous, the Roman aqueducts. Modern global civilization has made one contribution to this eternal pantheon. It is not the moon landing. It is the semiconductor supply chain." Not the steam engine? Not the automobile? The printing press? The interstate highway system? Airplanes? Nuclear energy? The international space station? Television? The moving picture? How about oil rigs that dig 7 miles underneath the ocean? How about antibiotics? NONE of these are as "monumental an achievement" as...Machu Picchu? Is Macchu Picchu even really that different than, say, Stonehenge, Easter Island, or Angkor Wat? Of course the subtext here is that listing any of the above "achievements" would be to glorify the white man too much. He even throws a little extra shade on Rome "if we're being generous." Thank you so much for your generosity Gideon Lewis-Kraus! Could it really be that not one editor questioned your exhaustive and unimpeachable list of the 5 greatest things ever created by humanity? Do you realize how ignorant and chauvinistic such a list would be in literally any other context? An absolute joke. Garbage in garbage out. It's time for a new age of magazines.

2nd vs 3rd wave feminism was kind of like this, the dissolution of belief transgenderism was impossible under 2nd wave feminism, since 2nd wave feminism was still grounded in reproductive biology and formed a coherent set of beliefs by 3rd wave all this goes away
yes we did believe things, and we would evaluate our decisions against our beliefs this did not preclude all motivated reasoning, but it did impose an expectation of moral and intellectual accountability the internet undid this, and inverted the applied meaning of many words from the old beliefs

once people realized this, the more dignified thing was to stop arguing over positions on a shifting bed of sand, and stop elevating professed beliefs, as if the nominal meaning of words was constant over time

This is so incredibly lame. And every Princeton freshman was required to sit through this during orientation.
