My close friend Marilú Paredes, 63, from Cabimas, Venezuela, was detained by US immigration on August 25 and deported to the Central African Republic, a country she had never set foot in and whose language she doesn't speak.
She left behind her husband, who has a chronic illness and depended on her care, plus her 3 daughters and 4 grandchildren. Her family still doesn't know why she was sent there or how to bring her home.
She's not the only one. Since 2025 the US has sent nearly 28,000 people to "third countries" that aren't their own, 536 of them to African nations, Venezuelans included. Many had no ties to those places, and some even had legal protection from removal.
Her daughter Mariu started a fundraiser to cover lawyers and basic needs. Every donation helps bring Marilú closer to her family, and if you can't give, a repost helps a lot 🙏

You don't know how weird/rare/hopeful it is to see an opposition figure be shown live on TV in Venezuela.

""I think it would be very tough for her to be the leader. She doesn't have the support within or the respect within the country. She's a very nice woman, but she doesn't have the respect."

A comment on my post reads: "Now there really are Venezuelans dancing in the streets."
When Trump made his comment earlier that Venezuelans were happy and dancing in the streets at the removal of Maduro, they were not. Of course, many people were overjoyed, jubilant, relieved and shocked at his capture, but they couldn't celebrate out of fear of detention. They were nervous and scared given that other chavista figures remained in power, dubious that repression would disappear.
There have been some small and modest protests once again this year, but none like the ones that will be about to come. Opposition supporters have been waiting for this day, for Maria Corina Machado to return. Although she is not in power and there is still no election date, her return undoubtedly gives her supporters a huge boost - and so yes, now there are Venezuelans dancing in the streets.
