As a Democratic Strategist what I’ve been advising dems is this: Hit the ground running with legislation that is inarguably in the best interest of the American people, and hold off on anything divisive like impeachment. The political reality is that the Democratic Party itself is STILL historically unpopular according to polling - that’s measurable, so let’s not overplay our hand here. But for the grace of God we won in SPITE of that. The best thing the new Congress can do is put forth easily passable bills, pass a bill requiring that RX drug rebates be passed along to customers, work on infrastructure and spending bills, pass a bill that gives widows of the Iran conflict death benefits (which right now they can’t collect on because it is isn’t officially a war), pass a tax relief bill for elderly scam-victims so that Memaw and Pawpaw can write the losses off on their taxes, Pass the Major Richard Star Act, so eligible medically retired veterans can receive military retirement pay alongside VA disability compensation. And most importantly and immediately - a standalone bill preventing congressional stock trading would be WILDLY popular and the right thing to do and addresses one of the main concerns of exit polling - corruption. And then see if Trump will still insist on using his powers to veto THOSE. Don’t overplay your hands right now with endless subpoenas and investigations, not off the jump at least. Give Americans what exit polling showed they voted for. Keep it simple, stupid.

Some random data notes that continue to have me shocked about last night. White Males with No College Degree (the "MAGA base") - absolutely bonkersly shifted to the left. To call this seismic is an understatement. /1

Ron DeSantis described the GOP rout in blistering terms this morning, saying the result bordered on an "extinction-level event for Republicans." "Let's just be clear about what happened last night. This is close to an extinction-level event for Republicans in many parts of the country as we have seen probably in the last 100 years," DeSantis told reporters in Tallahassee. DeSantis went on to highlight that, starting in January, only one of the 10 largest states in the U.S. will be governed by a Republican: FL Gov.-elect Byron Donalds. via NBC

This right here says it all:
For the last two years, the Trump Administration has been governed by a simple mantra: “We can just do things.” On Tuesday, voters replied, “So can we,” and wiped out the GOP. This was not a blue wave. This was not a blue tsunami. This was the breakup of a winning coalition. Those voters, in breaking up the coalition, treated downballot races as proxies for their contempt of Washington, D.C. The race for dog catcher became nationalized because of Republican political malpractice. In 2024, Donald Trump assembled a multiracial and multiethnic coalition of voters who bristled at the progressivism of the Democrats and the wreckage of the economy. By 2026, Trump and his White House acolytes set that coalition on fire to cater to a group of hyperonline grievance mongers who have confused Twitter with real life. Last night, the American constitutional system worked as designed and worked so well and so thoroughly that the party that lied to itself in 2020 that it had lost only because the election was stolen is now lying to itself that it lost only because of gas prices and war. Last night’s drubbing was too complete to be theft. It was gas prices.
And it was the war. But it was also calling affordability a “hoax.”
And it was also the corruption.
The incompetence.
The tariffs.
The playing nice with Russia while treating our allies worse than our enemies.
The impression of cruelty.
The overly aggressive deportations.
The accidental arrests of American citizens who were Hispanic.
The arrogance.
The ballroom.
The reflecting poll.
The golf courses.
The arch.
The Qatari 747.
The aggressive redistricting push.
The threats against enemies. It turns out a weekend Fox and Friends host might not be a reassuring beacon of competence to Americans. Gas prices and the war cannot explain a wipe out from top to bottom in Texas or Georgia or losing South Carolina or Ohio or a total coast to coast wipe out. Only the simpletons can believe that. Adam Hamilton won Finney County in Kansas, which was a Trump +35 county in 2024 and he did so with Hispanic voters. He did not do that just because of war and gas prices. And shall we talk about Mississippi? A few weeks ago, Bo French in Texas attacked University of Texas students who were American citizens of Indian descent. A portion of the President’s base cheered him on. Even some within the Administration, on public Twitter accounts tied to the Administration, echoed him. Those voters’ parents repudiated the racism in the GOP and wiped out Republicans in Texas, not because they support the Democrats, but because the party they had supported turned on them. It was political malpractice by the GOP.

Dems will get 55 Senate seats and 250+ House seats. Looking at the Senate map and considering such a massive House margin, it is very unlikely Republicans will recapture the Congress in 2028. Might not have a shot at Senate control until 2032.

It’s been eye-opening to see what’s happening over on Truth Social over the night—and it ain’t pretty. To my friends across the aisle: there’s plenty of room for you over here on this side of history. I never gave up on you, and I’ve always tried my best to be respectful, even when I wasn’t always afforded the same grace. We don’t have to agree on everything to roll up our sleeves, work together, and get this country back on track.

Re-posting this for the history books:
If we nominate Trump, we will get destroyed.......and we will deserve it.

My mom had to take her beloved cat Romeo to the vet today for an emergency procedure. I asked her how he was doing once home and she said “he’s fine but looks confused and disoriented like he doesn’t know where he is” - without missing a beat I said: “you better watch out, he might get wheeled into congress if he’s acting like that!”
