Hear hear, we at @reporters_co and @rti404 have been opposing the DPDP Act and its devastating impact on information that is of public interest.
Perhaps the govt will sit up now that bigger players see it as being damaging to them as well.

We at The Reporters Collective @reporters_co, a tiny non-profit newsroom, stood up to defend journalism against govt attempt to paralyse the profession through a Trojan horse in the Privacy law. We filed a case before the Supreme Court in February 2026 and launched rti404.com, a watchdog project to protect RTI and journalism, both.
Months later the for- profit big media businesses have realised, not just journalism but revenue of their media business would be hurt too by what the govt is doing.
We are glad they have eventually seen value in joining us.

EXCLUSIVE: India’s biggest news publishers including Ambani's Network18, Adani's NDTV, Indian Express, Times Internet & others mount the most high-profile challenge yet to Modi’s privacy law, warning it would “render investigative journalism a benign and neutered recorder of events.”
DNPA (@publishers_news) has taken the law to the Supreme Court. They argue it would trample investigative work and let New Delhi identify journalists’ sources.
The provisions “constitute pre-censorship which is anathema to any democracy worth its name,” the group’s 698-page filing says.
The key concerns:
🔹 Consent: requiring a journalist to notify the subject of an investigation and seek consent “would allow that subject to destroy evidence, intimidate witnesses”
🔹 Erasure: people can withdraw consent and demand their data be erased, which the group says could force publishers to unpublish or heavily redact news reports
🔹 Sources: a “nakedly unguided” power to demand information that “can extend to privileged communications in possession of a reporter or the informant”
In a letter to the government, the group said India “has chosen to grant broad exemptions to the state, while failing to extend any corresponding protection to the press.”

The Ram Mandir is in the news because of a donations scandal. Back in 2023 itself, an RTI applicant had sought the government order containing details of how the Temple Trust would be run.
By God’s grace, this RTI was denied.
Visit rti404.com to know why.
And, we at #RTI404, are keeping a record of RTIs the government has denied or met with silence. Find us at rti404.com 📁
We're also working on exciting updates detailing how RTI has become an endangered democratic tool (Hint: DPDP Act). Stay tuned.
Highly inspired by Gandhi, our government is planning to launch non-cooperation movement against public. Public will not be shown any official document.
In short, government has slowly — and then not so slowly — suppressed your right to know how it functions.
Can you call a corrupt official corrupt? Not without their permission. The DPDP Act, protects frauds unless the person specifically gives their permission to name them.

An RTI asked the RBI: who shaped your fintech Regulatory Sandbox framework?
RBI's reply: here are the comments. The names? Redacted.
They were likely to have been corporations, think tanks, lobbyists — weighing in on public policy.

How the DPDP Act, in the name of privacy, has put investigative journalists and their journalism at risk in India.
I spoke to @AnjaliB_ and @johriamrita to explain why @reporters and I have filed a case against the unconstitutional provisions of the DPDP Act before the Supreme Court.

A people’s movement: In 1990s, a grassroots org Mazdoor Kisan Shakti Sangathan (@mkssindia) mobilised people in Rajasthan’s villages to ask for govt records because the daily wage workers were not getting paid correctly. The movt spreads across the state.

It is how we question power, demand accountability and participate meaningfully in public life.
RTI404 is our attempt to record the government's silence. One denial at a time. Because we really just have two options: Be informed or become obedient.

Why did we build RTI404?
As investigative journalists, the Right to Information Act has been indispensable to our work — helping uncover who donated to political parties via electoral bonds, how many families received pandemic compensation, and where governance fell short.
Our RTI Denials Directory is a growing database of Right to Information applications where the government has, in many ways, said: “No, can’t tell” — through denials, evasive or contradictory replies, or no response at all.
Search the Directory by central or state authorities.
