Progressives were faster than conservatives to adopt the Internet, and this led to two decades of progressives absolutely curb-stomping conservatives in the culture wars.
Now progressives are refusing to learn to use AI, so there's no chance of repeating the feat.

Amazon asked Portland for a Preapplication Meeting for a proposed delivery drone facility.
City staff chose to classify drones as "helicopters" by interpreting rules as strictly as possible, making permitting more difficult.
Now the plan is withdrawn.

Luxury beliefs:
- I don't need police (because my neighborhood is already safe, screw those who live in tough places)
- Minimum wage should be $25 (I already make more and who cares that this means fewer entry level jobs overall - harming those who need it - but it makes me feel good to say it)
- Housing is too expensive (but don't build condos in my neighborhood, it ruins the character)
- No new oil & gas! (I can afford the higher energy prices)
- All cars must be extremely energy efficient (it's fine I can pay $35,000+ for an entry level car)
The list goes on. You can believe these things because they don't impact you. But they are harmful to the people you think you're helping.

Progressive YIMBYs in DC fail to acknowledge zoning is not the limiting factor on new housing in DC. Itโs the awful tenant and condo laws, terrible business regs, and high taxes that are hampering growth (in addition to lack of widespread good schools / access to state unis).

Modern politics increasingly rewards having the strongest possible opinion about something you have spent the least possible time trying to understand.
The American voter increasingly demand sensationalism and they have no idea how wealthy they are compared to the rest of the world.
They may end up being the cause of their self inflicted belt tightening and they are in no way ready for an ounce of actual poverty.
We need immediate competence to take over sensationalism and social media, especially tiktok is the enemy of that.

This is the CVS off 14th St. in DC. You can decide crime shouldnโt have consequences. But then the rest of us get to live like prisoners with basic necessities locked behind plexiglass, waiting around to push a button so someone can bring us a tube of toothpaste.
We teach children that actions have consequences. We teach them rules matter. Then they become adults and suddenly we invent a thousand excuses for why neither should apply.

As a child of the 2000s, itโs kinda sad watching the smart people side turn into Evangelical Christians,
Taylor Lorenz on the data center backlash:
"I went on Eric Newcomer's podcast recently, because I'm in this community group in LA, and they found out that there's a data center in downtown LA. It's not a hyperscale. The comments are like, this is why I've been feeling off, or my dog has cancer."
"That's not to say that there aren't serious environmental concerns with Colossus and some of these. Construction can disrupt the water table. Okay, but let's have an actual conversation about it."
"Everybody has lost the plot. There's no nuance, and if you talk to a lot of these people, they can't even explain what a data center is."
"A lot of the outrage about the data centers is coming from people that live in Brooklyn. You're feeding people slop and chum, and you're not moving these issues forward, and we're not talking about sustainable ways to build it."

You can't afford housing, education, and healthcare because of government intervention. These are straightforward examples of how regulation + subsidies makes things less affordable.
This kind of rhetoric was good in the 1980s when America was going through a consumer product boom, but itโs not going to meet the current moment. The Leftโs easy counter is, โSure, you can buy a cheap fridge, but you canโt afford housing, education, and healthcare.โ
Weโre not going to get the DSA generation to change their minds with an appeal to consumerism and recycled arguments from โI, Pencil.โ Sadly, weโre way beyond that point.
