In the 1970s, a pioneer team of Argentinian, Chilean and UK biogeographers studied the vegetation of Patagonia along a 450 km transect. Now the data are available #OA and published in @JVSAVS, thanks to a collaboration with @sPlot_iDiv @CONICETDialoga

Plant functional traits should be tightly linked to climate, but this was elusive to prove at the global scale.
@KambachStephan shows why: The relationship is habitat specific

A new study incl. authors from @IBOTCZ shows that the Eastern European forest-steppe region is home to a similar number of plant species as the Amazon rainforest, which only becomes apparent when species are counted in smaller sampling areas.

Hot off the press @NatureComms ⬇️ The first (near-global) map of local (alpha) plant species richness, meaning at the spatial scale at which species co-occur! I am so proud to be part of the great @sPlot_iDiv team led by Francesco Maria Sabatini 👏 Teaser: unexpected hotspots 😉

How does #plant #species #richness scale with plot size across #ecosystems and regions? For instance, how many species are there in 10, 100, 1000, 10000 m2? Curious? Check our recent paper led by F. Sabatini from @sPlot_iDiv published today @NatureComms

22 years after Myers' classic global hotspot analysis, comes this massive new @sPlot_iDiv study led by Francesco Sabatini.
One big take-home: Andes-Amazon species richness is very high, no matter the plot size.
Much more too here

We know where #biodiversity #hotspots are in the world. But these were only identified based on the number of species occurring in a region (i.e. gamma diversity).
Whether a region contains species-poor or species-rich ecosystems is a different matter
