Anup was a great editor. I felt privileged working with him.

@RestofWorld will publish its final stories at the end of January. I’ve been sitting with this news for a few days, and I keep thinking about how personal this project was for me. When Sophie Schmidt asked me to help build Rest of World, it felt like a chance to fix something I’d been frustrated by for my whole career: seeing the parts of the world I come from covered as an afterthought. I was there at the beginning, with a handful of hires and a bet that sounded obvious to us and strange to almost everyone else: that most of the world’s internet users live outside the West, and their stories deserved to be covered with the same depth, ambition, and care. We didn’t want to cover “emerging markets.” We wanted to cover the people who were building, hacking, gig-working, organizing, and surviving through technology in countries like Nepal, where I grew up. We hired reporters who lived those stories rather than parachuted into them. We edited from the assumption that a delivery rider in Lagos was as important a protagonist as a CEO in San Francisco. The thousands of stories Rest of World published helped change how a lot of newsrooms think about who tech journalism is for. Media ventures end for many reasons, and most of them are economic. That doesn’t change what Rest of World was able to prove: the audience was real, the journalism mattered, and the model of covering the world from the world actually works. Thank you to Sophie for making the publication possible for all these years; to Christine Glancey, Michael Donohoe, Michael Zelenko, Itika Sharma Punit, Rina Chandran, Indranil Ghosh, and the team for carrying it this far; and to every reporter, editor, designer, and producer who passed through Rest of World and made it what it was. A special shout-out to Eli Berger, who’s been a rock for Rest of World since the beginning, navigating us through Covid-19, messy international hiring, legal threats, reporter safety, and a dozen other things. The publication’s archive is a gift. I encourage everyone to read it. And if you’re hiring, hire Rest of World’s journalists. You won’t find a better group of people.

Films Division cartoon from 1972, ‘Tree of Unity’. I wonder what the 2026 version would look like? Perhaps the man with the axe would cut the tree for his businessman friends and then do Hindu-Muslim? H/t @sandeepd_adhikrut

NEW: MAGA voters say they're going to the polls to fight “communism”—but when asked what communism actually means, things get awkward FAST. In The Daily Show's upcoming special “Red Flags,” Jordan Klepper puts Republican voters on the spot with one simple question. Their answers are something else. These two minutes are worth watching. See for yourself!

After praising Modi, in less than a month, Vucic lost the election tonight to a student movement in Serbia.

If vacuousness is kept sealed in an empty drum for 15 years, the result will look like this.
#WATCH | Delhi: Former CJI DY Chandrachud says, "In any society—especially in a democracy—institutions are essential. Whether they are public or private, institutions are necessary for us to progress and for the nation to move forward. We must strengthen our existing institutions and make them more robust. In the healthcare sector, in particular, there is a critical need to focus on patient care and welfare. Public hospitals, for instance, serve the poor and the needy—many of whom travel from great distances to seek care. Therefore, it is imperative that we further strengthen and fortify our public hospitals and public health infrastructure..."

What ISRO chief does to rockets, Sudhir does to Modi: lifting to sky. And Modi with all his failures is much heavy to lift. Its rocket science Mr @hvgoenka
If Prasar Bharati can spend ₹15 crore a year on a DD News show featuring a star anchor, while the ISRO Chairman’s basic pay is about ₹27 lakh a year, shouldn’t we rethink our priorities? If India wants to conquer space and attract our finest scientific minds, our rewards must match our ambitions.

This would be very sad. As a global technology reporter, @restofworld was a frequent source of "damn, why didn't I think of that" stories. I hope they find a way to keep their excellent work going.
News: Rest of World, the nonprofit newsroom focused on the impact of technology outside the West founded by Sophie Schmidt, tells donors in an email it will “cease publishing as a standalone entity” at the end of January.

Read somewhere that the animating spirit of the Nazis was not the strutting self-confidence, which came later, but dread-- that unless Germans take extreme steps they would be destroyed. Sanghis are a lot like that, afraid of everything incl the existential threat posed by essays

This is pretty much how most middle class Indians treat their domestic help. What goes around comes around.
My cousin recently joined a company, and the rules there are absolutely crazy. He can't take a single paid leave for the first 6 months. If anyone isn't dressed formally, isn't properly groomed, or is even 10 minutes late, they deduct ₹1000 from their salary. And here's the best part. They have to take at least one proper 15-minute client call after 7 PM, or it'll be considered a half-day. Basically, a way to force employees to stay longer. And this is a pretty well-known, listed company. Seems like they're making money by exploiting both their employees and their clients, who apparently aren't satisfied either. It's honestly not hard to see why some Indian companies struggle to grow into big businesses. With this kind of cheap mindset, they care more about controlling employees than building a good company.

“Apparently, the solution to every crisis in 2026 is to hold a press conference about 1947. Our current Prime Minister has developed an extraordinary relationship with time. For every present failure, he takes you backwards. For every unfulfilled promise, he sends you to 2047. Fast fast forward.  The only place he appears reluctant to stay is the present. And that, dear friends, is where you actually live.” sanjayjhabombay.substack.com…

Bhakts keep calling me all sorts of names here: 'urban naxal' 'dirty/ugly leftist scum' 'Commie Bong whore'. So I thought I would lean into all this name calling and share a wonderful visual someone shared on Insta about all the things we have because of protests. Protests are indeed the lifeblood of a diminishing democracy.
