SDPI hosted M. Sualeh Ahmad Faruqui, the newly appointed Rector of the National School of Public Policy (NSPP), for a special meeting at the institute. Dr Abid Qaiyum Suleri, Executive Director SDPI, briefed the Rector on SDPI’s work across health, education, gender empowerment, economic and fiscal reform, and climate change. He also introduced our flagship Sustainable Development Conference (SDC), which last year brought together experts from 23 countries across 48 sessions. Rector Faruqui observed that institutions too often work in silos. He emphasised that deliberate partnerships in joint research and knowledge management are vital to bringing about the transformational change Pakistan needs. Dr Ehsan Mehmood Khan called on the state and society to learn from one another. He stressed the importance of knowledge rooted in local realities and of embracing emerging technologies such as AI. Noor Ahmed, Senior Policy Advisor SDPI, underlined the need to bridge the trust gap between civil servants and the business community. | Poverty’s Vicious Cycle | A family may have enough to eat, yet still be unable to keep a daughter in college or move closer to work. That is how poverty traps people in place. Pakistan’s poverty rate has climbed to 28.9 percent in 2024-25, up from 21.9 percent in 2018-19, which the World Bank puts at about 70 million people. Rural poverty, at 36.2 percent, is more than double the urban rate. Low income limits choices, and limited choices deepen low income. The article by Dr Abid Qaiyum Suleri, Executive Director SDPI, argues that real progress means widening people’s choices, not just lifting them above a poverty line. Drawing on Bangladesh’s BRAC programme, where household earnings rose 21 percent, he calls for livelihood programmes that combine training, basic capital and market access. He also urges functioning schools, childcare and safe transport, enforced minimum wages and EOBI registration, and insurance for platform delivery and ride workers.
