here's the argument some ai lab employees are making
- they genuinely believe what they're working on might kill everyone
- they continue to work on it because if this thing gets built it should be by responsible people like them
- the reason they do money things like selling enterprise deals and IPOing is solely to fund this effort
if this is all true then why is employee equity a thing? if you want to tell this story of being terrified of what you're building it doesn't work when there's a clear profit motive
it's particularly weird when people vest and then leave and write a tirade about how these companies are bringing the end of everything
if you want to act like this is the manhattan project, those scientists didn't have equity in something that gives them generational wealth
you don't get to say something bad is happening while profiting off it and also being seen as the good guy. one of these has to go

With many 🧩 dropping recently, a more complete picture is emerging of LLMs not as a chatbot, but the kernel process of a new Operating System. E.g. today it orchestrates:
- Input & Output across modalities (text, audio, vision)
- Code interpreter, ability to write & run programs
- Browser / internet access
- Embeddings database for files and internal memory storage & retrieval
A lot of computing concepts carry over. Currently we have single-threaded execution running at ~10Hz (tok/s) and enjoy looking at the assembly-level execution traces stream by. Concepts from computer security carry over, with attacks, defenses and emerging vulnerabilities.
I also like the nearest neighbor analogy of "Operating System" because the industry is starting to shape up similar:
Windows, OS X, and Linux <-> GPT, PaLM, Claude, and Llama/Mistral(?:)).
An OS comes with default apps but has an app store.
Most apps can be adapted to multiple platforms.
TLDR looking at LLMs as chatbots is the same as looking at early computers as calculators. We're seeing an emergence of a whole new computing paradigm, and it is very early.

Tried to build a frontend entirely using AI tools, gave up. Spent most of my time asking it to fix its own errors.
Current LLMs are useful for specific components/functions, but not ready to fully manage even a small codebase just yet. Will have to try again in a month. – at San Francisco, CA

School should teach kids how to crush life in the world they’ll be adults in.
Given that new AI magic wands keep appearing every few months, schools should focus less on teaching obsolete skills and more on teaching kids how to be the world’s most amazing wizards.
