Packing squares seems to be having its moment, so I took a crack at it... I found 25 new square packing records using evolutionary LLM program search, similar to AlphaEvolve.

Scattered Threads 🧵 Art dealers often cut up textiles and sold pieces separately. Opus 5.5 combed through 40k museum photos for pieces that may belong together. These Qing rank badges at @ClevelandArt and @metmuseum may even turn out to be the front and back of the same robe.

How it works: - DINOv2 embedding similarity found 24k candidate pairs. - Patch matching + RANSAC filtered these pairs down. - Claude reviewed ~170 against museum records. - I then manually compared the best matches.

21 pairs survived the filters. 6 turned out to be links that museums already note, a good sign that the search finds real connections. The other 15 may be new, or known to specialists. Read more: ryanxu.net/scattered-threads…

I need to come clean and give credit where it’s due. This is not my quote but rather Ryan circa 2019, surfaced today by Claude as it compiled an archive of everything that I’ve ever written. I probably peaked around then.

"Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5" is giving me far too much credit.

Era of vibe forensics has begun
We discovered a sophisticated recording device that was hidden inside one of our offices. We used our models to understand the device and where it had come from, identifying that a specific employee had planted it a few days earlier. We referred the matter to the FBI, and we’re grateful to the agents and prosecutors who moved quickly to make an arrest. The FBI’s investigation is ongoing and we will continue to support their work. At this time, we have no indications of this individual inappropriately accessing or exfiltrating model weights, source code, or customer data. The employee was terminated. We take protecting our technology, data, and people seriously, and as a matter of national importance. Our security program is designed to protect against a wide range of threat actors, from insider risks to cybercriminals to nation states, and this case is an example of how AI can help address these sophisticated security threats.

Why stop at tesseracts???? Here we establish bounds on packing heptadecaracts in heptadecaracts: n=1: s=1 n=2: s=2 ... n=131072: s=2 n=131073: s=2 + 1/√2 by Göbel's packing Here we project n=131073 into 2d, coloring by how many heptadecaracts project onto each point, mod 17

I have some numbers for up to n=70 which I'll list here - didn't post them because I wasn't sure if anyone was even keeping track. Will update my repo later tonight! 65: 4.7071173296 66: 4.7071171288 67: 4.7071215013 68: 4.7071153112 69: 4.7071152968 70: 4.7072715607 LOL they are not even monotonic. That's how unfinished this is.
