🚨🎙️ Alberto Brignoli, AEK Athens goalkeeper, on his heated altercation with Federico Valverde after their defeat to Real Madrid. 🎙️Reporter: We saw you having a heated exchange with Federico Valverde after the final whistle. What exactly happened? 🗣️Brignoli: Honestly, I know what people saw. Some will think I’m simply a sore loser, that I couldn’t accept the defeat and decided to confront someone because I was frustrated. But no, this had absolutely nothing to do with losing. I knew before this game that we were going to face an incredibly difficult opponent. It’s Real Madrid. You know their history, you know the quality they have, and you understand that sometimes you’re going to lose against teams like that. That’s football. You win some, you lose some. I can accept that. But when losing starts becoming a matter of life and death because of the way someone is striking a football, then I think something needs to be addressed. After the match, I went to Valverde and asked him a very simple question: Why do you strike the ball like you’re trying to k!ll somebody? Are you trying to end someone’s career or, worse, someone’s life? Do you ever stop to think about the people standing in front of you when you shoot? And his response honestly made me even angrier. He looked at me as if I had no right to question him. His attitude was basically that he’d scored, helped his team win, and whatever happened to the people in front of him wasn’t his concern. That’s when I lost my patience. 🎙️Reporter: So you felt his response was disrespectful? 🗣️Brignoli: Absolutely. Because we’re talking about human beings here. The defenders standing in front of him have families. The goalkeeper he’s shooting against has people waiting for him at home. These are people who leave their loved ones every day to come and do their jobs. Football is supposed to be entertainment. It’s supposed to bring people happiness, excitement and beautiful memories. We’re not supposed to leave the stadium worrying about whether somebody is going to make it home alive. We’ve already witnessed enough heartbreaking moments in this sport. We’re still mourning Jesús de Miguel, and yet some players behave as though another person’s life is just part of the game. That’s what makes me angry. You can fight for your team, you can be aggressive, you can tackle hard and give everything on the pitch. Nobody is asking you to play without intensity. But you cannot put another human being in danger and expect everyone to remain silent because you’re a professional footballer. 🎙️Reporter: Do you believe FIFA should intervene? 🗣️Brignoli: I genuinely believe FIFA needs to look into this. I’m not saying Valverde shouldn’t shoot, I’m not saying he shouldn’t score goals, and I’m certainly not questioning his quality as a footballer. But there has to be a conversation about responsibility. The way he strikes that ball sometimes, if it hits a defender directly in the chest, particularly around the heart, this could be a completely different conversation today. We might not even be discussing a football match. We might be discussing another tragedy. And I want people to understand something: scoring a goal is never more important than somebody’s life. Never. I can go home tonight disappointed because we’ve lost to Real Madrid. I can accept that Madrid were better than us. But I refuse to accept a mentality where somebody’s safety becomes irrelevant simply because you’re trying to win a football match.
