My favorite western indie dev's more recent games are amare with pronoun selection but the mc still has a set design (there's even some customization) and I love her writing. I have liked a lot of amare games but my enjoyment was kinda hampered by not having an mc design

I don't see an issue with amare devs marketing to otome players and both do have overlap in their playerbase? Also amare devs have demos so you can try them out. It is true that otome players might enjoy amare games and if they're upfront about li x li content, there's no problem

I actually don’t mind Amulit’s linear structure because I have played otome games where the routes have events that are so similar and repetitive they might as well have been linear with LI endings. I also appreciate them doing something different

I don’t understand this rhetoric that LI shipping has always been popular or normalized in otome? I feel like it’s always been unpopular in console otomes and m I still remember the string of incidents that led to indie devs coining the term amare

Amare was never meant to be like, a ghetto term where ppl shove queer vns but its own genre and its own genre conventions. Also they are still very much indie games by one person or small teams and imo commercial games tend to be pretty polished

I mean commercial amare games tend to be pretty polished. They are very much games by people who make the games they wanna make and a lot of them also do interesting and experimental stuff

Seeing remarried empress on my TL reminds me of how much I hate that classist slop. Part of why I stopped reading manhwa is how every woman who doesn’t kiss the mc’s feet is the enemy because so much of it is slop power fantasy

I am kinda annoyed at how people treat amare as this term for where the icky queer vns go and I am also a big fan of the dev who coined the term (i will not name them here). I also don’t enjoy the genderless writing or the mc not having a design but plenty don’t have that

Also I notice LI x LI is always mlm and never like wlw (if there’s more than two romanceable female routes) or het and it makes me think that the devs have a certain audience in mind or wanted to make bl which is fine if that’s what they want

I don’t enjoy LIxLI either but I can just scroll past or mute. I don’t see a reason to get annoyed unless I’m blindsided by it in the actual game and I respect devs who are upfront about it

Otome game discourse finally made me understand how some people could self insert in romance novels. Anyway, I don’t care how other people play and I also don’t like LIxLI but it is weird to call other players cucks? Like maybe they just want to read a story I don’t know

I might get the Skyrim Anniversary Edition upgrade for my Switch next time it's on sale. Right now I'm enjoying the game as it is and it really holds up well for me

I also don’t believe fanworks in the sense people think of fanworks (idk why mods and analyses and theories are not in the same conversation) are not necessary for a fandom to exist? The original work is the source of the fandom.

I love playing video games and really only gacha made me read fanfic based on video games (i don’t anymore but still) and like, if there’s one hobby where fandoms don’t need fandom centric works, it’s games. Even with mods, I don’t think most Skyrim fans use mods?

Like I can play Skyrim vanilla and have fun with it but I think that with games, mods (which are also a form of fanwork) are more likely to make people go to the source material compared to fanfic and fanart? A lot of fandoms have become divorced from the source, I feel
39
I have been playing Skyrim vanilla on my Switch and still nothing comes close to Bethesda for me. It absolutely holds up without mods and the atmosphere is unmatched and I am still discovering things I have not seen in previous playthroughs

Anyway I just keep seeing ao3 discourse on my tl and it keeps getting worse.

Some fic writers lowkey sound like they think they’re the people that readers are fans of and not the original work or the original creators…you are also a fan?? Did you not write because you are a fan of something and wanted to contribute an idea or story

I am so excited for Elder Scrolls 6. I still believe there’s no dev like Bethesda and their open world games

There is a reason I pretty much stick to the original work these days and steer clear from the fandom. A lot of the time the original work has become secondary to the fandom experience and I just don’t think getting into something for the fandom is a healthy way of viewing art
