🚨 NO evidence to support the notion that police-in-schools make educational spaces safer. ⚠️ The detrimental impacts are still present regardless of police-in-school programs being rebranded/reformed/revised/‘reimagined’/‘created anew’ #BCPoli #BCed #YYJ #YYJPoli #BCLab #CDNEd
Here’s a short thread on SD61’s direction on police in schools. The proposal reads like a new type of SLO (“police member assigned to schools”), but with some oversight over programs delivered, and formal requirements for regular meetings, data collection, etc. 🧵

City report it will cost $4.7 m to enforce 'no sheltering on a sidewalk, park or boulevard" 100% of time. I imagine two bylaw officers assigned to their very own personal unhoused human to monitor 7am to 7pm. How about $4.7 m on rent subsidies instead? pub-victoria.escribemeetings…

It's #yyj police budget season! VicPD wants $81.1M, a 12.5% increase, including $2M councils said ‘no’ to previously (waiting on appeal with the province). If councillors and the province give them what they want, that's a $22.9 million, 39.3% increase in the last 5 years. 🧵

Scrapping BC's Mental Health & Addictions ministry is a tacit admission of its failure. BCNDP is telegraphing radical shift in drug policy. If the goal was ever ending mass deaths, that's over. Now it's about street disorder & assuaging fears, stoked among voters by the right

You’ve got to be kidding me. Vancouver police apparently changed their press release *after* an article criticizing its data was published that makes it look like the reporter lied, resulting in targeted abuse towards The Tyee. xitter.gq/thetyee/status/1855356…

Searching bclaws, it looks like the last time (the only other time?) the government issued an "administrative directive," at least with those words, it was in 2009, and it was about closing schools for swine flu exposure. Forcing police into schools is a swine flu-level priority.
Replying to @step_harrison
Via @RobShaw_BC, the government has issued a directive that SD61 work with the police board on a "proactive, coordinated safety plan." This would relate to the letter on this meeting's agenda, where the province asks SD61 to consider VicPD's draft MOU. xitter.gq/RobShaw_BC/status/1836…
