It's not too different than the reason you can be better off buying a frozen pizza even though you could've made a meal that was both better and cheaper. It enables you to do something else that you couldn't have otherwise done!

That doesn't describe this situation, the point is that there are multiple possible tasks that can be allocated in multiple ways, not that there's a single task that is done by one or the other--there is nothing to trade off if each party can do only one task.

These issues will never get fixed unless that concept is more generally understood by people. Until then, AI will definitely enable those negatives, though, just like any other technology does.

Are the results of responses to incentives, they are not choices and their existence does not imply that anyone wanted them to happen! And it certainly does not imply that we can just "choose" to do otherwise!

I don't buy that AI will cause this, but I do wish anyone appreciated that social lives respond to incentives just like everything else. All of the negative social changes we've seen--people hanging out less, having fewer friends, fewer close friends, etc--

Pessimistic but worth reading. What I think it gets right is that willingness to actually DO the things that give life meaningโ€”thinking, art, spending time with friendsโ€”is responsive to incentives, and for most people requires some institutional support. (Yes, even spending time with friends; compare how much you do so now as opposed to during high school or college.) Where Iโ€™m more optimistic is that I think the institutions that allow this will plausibly survive and flourish, and perhaps even increase in importance.

Restrictions on porn are genuinely such an insidious trojan horse for mass censorship because if you try to speak out against it, people on both sides of the political aisle will just write you off as a pervert.

Frankly, I think the anti-string-theory people are making exactly the same mistake, and are exactly as smart as this guy is.

So I see how that could be interpreted as uncertainty or confusion rather than evidence of really extensive understanding.

That guy's posts break my brain a little bit. I kinda get why his confusion would happen--we do have lots of overlapping ways of describing light and E&M (well, and phenomena in general), and it's not obvious that they're all compatible with each other.

Can any of these people try not being totally out of touch about everything all the time?

Hah, okay, so I looked through the wiki article on orexin and it says this: >Proper functioning of orexin has been shown to have a large degree of control over behaviors that are motivated by a need to survive, such as searching for food when an organism is starving.

It looks like it's an orexin antagonist, and orexin helps regulate wakefulness, arousal, energy expenditure, and hunger. So it's not implausible that it could have food-related effects.

That's a really interesting side effect! Is it documented? Your description makes it sound like there would be some kind of plausible neurological basis for it, but that's beyond the scope of the intro textbooks I learned from so I can't say for sure.

The people who complain that porn is inherently men exploiting women get really mad when you ask if that logic applies to gay porn. Especially if you bring up things like grindr.

claude now refuses to recreate specific existing games. Anthropic says users can't turn it off, and it covers clones, ports and mods. gamedevs doing licensed work are already complaining. this is a big deal for modders who make mashups or rebuild source. gameranx.com/updates/id/5644โ€ฆ
