We got thru the night! I'm not sure how - except for the hard work by the @EuroclubPerth team, the Connections crew and @OGAE_Australia. We worked ourselves into the ground to make it happen. In case I'm never in the DJ booth again, here was my view at the end of Perth's night. – at Perth, Western Australia
From last night at The Bird, Gloss playing their new single Rosary. My favorite Perth shoegaze band right now. I love the drummer's energy last night too!

Uber surge pricing kicked in when trying to go home - friday night, Halloween eve, I should have expected it. But with a discount, suddenly Uber Black was the same price as surge... and Uber Black was *bliss!* So good. That's the Uber experience I've been missing for years.
Went to the shoegaze club, enjoyed it more than goth night! 🎸 Might post videos & photos later. Still felt isolating, but I found a quiet empty corner to sit & manage Claudes between songs. Except the wall I was leaning against had a water leak & that's why no one sat there. 🤦♂️
Since human interaction didn't work out last night, trying to take advantage of the warm sunny day and work with Claude at the cafe. A couple more cross-platform apps in the works, at least for my own use.
Tried spending time with the humans tonight, but that was the most depressing goth Halloween night in a long time. Not that the event was bad, people liked it. I just didn't connect with it. Some people had analog film cameras (anti AI/tech), so its probably not my crowd anymore.
I finally change my sleep cycle to wake in the morning, like a "normal" person... and my neighbour decides to do construction work. Sounds like they're cutting off a whole metal roof by hand with an angle grinder & throwing the metal pieces at the ground. I am so tired. 😞😫🥱😩
This is one of the clearer descriptions I've seen of the AI divide. I really wish this was a blog post on the wider web. But even this is unlikely to shift anyone's mind.
I'm starting to sense a divide in the tech industry:
- People thriving on autonomy who are reinventing how they work and what tools they use with AI: LOTS of work, but they're enjoying it and getting very efficient
- People used to being mentored / trained / or simply told what to do and how. Frustrated with the lack of guidance from management on what to do with AI; also frustrated by seeing some of their peers thriving; increasingly bitter about AI and the state of the industry, as a whole
Neither group seems to be aware that there's another group, or have empathy for the other group

Apple II Agent (Opus 5.5) drew a pretty good pelican riding a bicycle (cc: @simonw) on the Apple Ii
Seen here in both color and monochrome
At this point, I'm expecting Anthropic to release Fable 5.5 and announce it found a counterexample to Fermi's Paradox.

There's at least one more option: roll back the networkification of all software over the last 20 years. Some software must be networked, but a lot is networked only because that enables more lucrative subscription business models. We could undo that. xitter.gq/sachaservan/status/211…
There are two approaches to cybersecurity now that we’re in the vulnpolcalypse:
1. “patch the planet” by burning mountains of tokens, red teaming, and patching until you think there are no more exploitable bugs in the software
2. Shrink software components into their most minimal essence, tailor them to a particular system, and then formally verify it
Both approches are now enabled by LLMs. But only the second one can be done on a budget and without having access to frontier cyber models like mythos.
This is why I’m excited to see more legacy software get boiled down, hardened, and verified
A bit of web searching suggests "The arithmetic Kakeya conjecture was implicitly formulated by Katz and Tao."
There's a bit more going on here, especially with the line about "leaving researchers free to organize their own efforts to explain the result". *ahem*
Getting pitched on an AI product that looks very enterprise-shaped, micromanaged, with every decision gated & audited. My new pushback is "Do you have examples of non-AI human teams using this?" If humans wouldn't touch it, why would AI prefer it?
So this is intriguing! The "tropical" agents have started crawling my sites & all emailing me reports... something I brought upon myself. Careful what you will into being.
What's intriguing is that their crawlers seem broken... in the very same way as Alibaba crawlers!
In yesterday's craziness, turning off PHP once it was clear the mitigations weren't enough... of course, that took out my search engine, didn't it?
Claude suggested we frantically rebuild it as a Windows app running on my laptop. Done in about 20 minutes.

Sucks to be a tired PHP developer in Australia at the moment.
