💻 macOS 14 Sonoma is arriving on 26th September!
👇 Here’s the only checklist you will need to ready your Mac for the update.
〰
✅ Check 1: Is your Mac supported?
Sonoma is NOT supported by the following Macs that run macOS 13 Ventura:
⦾ iMac 2017 and older
⦾ MacBook 2017 and older
⦾ MacBook Pro 2017 and older
All newer Macs are good to go.
〰
✅ Check 2: Do you have enough disk space?
A good thumb-rule is to have at least 15 GB of free disk space whenever you’re running an update. (Apple suggests 20 GB, however that’s quite liberal.)
In general, aim to have at least 10% of your disk free at all times for good SSD performance.
〰
✅ Check 3: Are there apps you don’t need anymore?
Take a look at your menu bar and in your Applications folder: if you’re someone like me that loves testing a lot of new apps, you will most likely find applications that you don’t use or need anymore.
Get rid of them.
While you’re at it, give your Desktop and Downloads folders a good spring cleaning too. ☺️
〰
✅ Check 4: Are your essential iCloud services turned on?
iCloud stores and syncs many vital data like Keychain (Passwords), Contacts and Notes, to name a few.
Visit System Settings to ensure you’re logged into iCloud and have the items you need turned on for a seamless transition to Sonoma.
〰
✅ Check 5: Do you have a current Time Machine backup?
Before installing a brand new operating system, it is imperative ‼️ to have a copy of your Mac as it was before you dived in.
Beyond iCloud I have two external hard disks always plugged into my Mac. They alternately back up my data every hour — I’d advise this to all professionals.
🚨 Things can go wrong in an update.
During my time with Apple, a failed macOS update was one of the most grueling customer problems we had to face and address — sadly, often in vain.
Sometimes it would drive customers to hopeless despair because they didn’t run a backup prior to an update.
✋ Please, please, please don’t let that potentially happen to you!
If you don’t have an external drive, please invest in one — they’re quite inexpensive nowadays. My first choice is Western Digital.
At the very least, ensure that you have a copy of your most important files safe and accessible — on an external drive and/or a cloud storage.
〰
🚀 Run your update and check out the new features!
macOS Sonoma has some amazing new additions: make sure you know about them to leverage them fully.
〰
🥵 Indexing is hot!
A new OS always does a lot of background indexing (making an inventory of your files and their locations, so that you can look them up fast later on) for the first few hours.
Because of this, your Mac might be running warmer (and louder) than usual, and draining battery quickly: do not worry — this is perfectly normal.
〰
🥳 That's about it! Have fun, and if you have a question, feel free to come rattle my cage.

Who all here believes it's better to do an erase and fresh install rather than restore from backup?

I read recently that 🇫🇮 Finland has started a program to conserve reindeer by spray painting their horns and backs with a (bio-friendly) reflective coating, so that speeding cars can notice them from a distance.
Now imagine the joy of wolves. 🙈😂

🧵 Space Cola Wars — a short story.
In the mid-1980s, Coca Cola and Pepsi spent north of $14 million to invent a can of soda that astronauts could drink in zero gravity — and the astronauts hated it.
