Tolkien loved newspaper crossword puzzle. He used to doodle patterns and symbols on the page while contemplating the clues.
This one was from The Times, 9 August 1960, originally kept by Tolkien Estate and displayed at #Tolkien: Maker of Middle-earth exhibition.
