X open sourced the For You algorithm today.
Everyone quotes the weights. Nobody quotes this: the apps on your phone are a model input. 84, by name: Claude, ChatGPT, Grok, Tesla, Coinbase, Starlink.
The only one it refuses to record is X itself.
Everything below is verified line by line in the published code.
WHAT ELSE IT KNOWS ABOUT YOU
• The full app list also includes Gemini, Phantom, Binance, Bybit, Robinhood, Shein, Reddit and Netflix. Each one is a yes or no signal attached to you.
• Your location does not come from GPS. It is derived from your IP, converted to latitude and longitude, and fed into the ranking model. Your IP also gets its own learned embedding table, 10 million entries.
• X keeps an inferred gender for you, separate from anything you declared, weighted by its own confidence score.
• Signals you did not know were signals: taking a screenshot of a post, hitting translate, clicking Grok analyze, and how long you stayed on an external link, split into 10 duration buckets. Your dwell time is measured, then capped at 30 seconds.
• The bot detector reads your phone's battery level, screen brightness and available storage. Those are the literal feature names in the model.
WHO GETS A FREE PASS
• Automatic enforcement carries a hardcoded exemption. The condition reads: and not a high page rank user. It applies to spam, harassment, illegal and regulated behaviors and more, all the way up to the automatic suspension for child sexual exploitation.
• The score that grants that status is a PageRank that only distributes its teleportation mass to premium and verified accounts. Paying feeds the score. The score exempts you.
• Automatic labeling of targeted insults only fires when the post language is English. It is the only language check in the entire repository.
WHAT MAKES YOU DISAPPEAR
• Shadowbanning has a name in the code: FOSNR labels. Four of them. Your post is dropped for everyone, followers included. You still see it perfectly.
• There is a label called llm_slop. If your account gets it, you are marked as spam for 30 days. There is a matching one for posts, and another for gibberish. AI slop is now an enforcement category with a timer on it.
• 3 of your last 5 posts labeled adult content puts a label on your whole account for 7 days.
• 16 countries are hardcoded for age gating. France, Germany, Brazil, Korea, Canada are in. The US is not. Your signup country wins over where you actually are.
• Your "show sensitive content" setting does nothing for posts from accounts you do not follow. And if the lookup of your own profile takes more than 150 milliseconds, the system treats you as opted out.
• Safety labels arrive with an expiration date and a country scope. The filtering code throws both away before deciding.
THE PARTS THAT READ LIKE JOKES
• Your Following tab is a search query. The literal filter string ends with include:spam.
• Three account IDs are hardcoded out of the timeline. Two of them are the @grok and @gork bot accounts.
• X safety classification runs on Gemma, a Google model, and falls back to Grok when it fails. The encoder that understands your posts is Qwen, from Alibaba.
• Every reply under a post is scored 0 to 3 by an AI, and the grading prompt is handed one threshold: whether the account being replied to has more than 100,000 followers.
• One ad every 3 posts, and up to half your feed can be ads. Each ad request ships your IP, user agent and mobile advertising ID. The ad service gets six times the latency budget of your own action history.
THE ONE GOOD THING, AND IT IS NARROW
There is a boost for small accounts. To qualify: under 1,000 followers, under 1,000 views on the post, original post only, and it must already rank in the top 85%. If you clear all of that, your post is lifted to the score of the 16th best candidate in that feed.
Exactly one post gets that per feed load. Not one per author. One.
AND ABOUT "NOTHING HELD BACK"
The repo itself disagrees. The moderation prompts are stripped out, with a comment saying it is to reduce gaming. Bot detection thresholds are replaced with sentinel values. One enforcement floor reads 12.34 followers, commented in the file as a mock value.
