⚡️William Lawrence, a co-founder of the youth climate group Sunrise Movement, has unseated Republican Rep. Tom Barrett in Michigan's 7th Congressional District, flipping back a seat Republicans took in 2024. The Associated Press has called the race.
Lawrence leads about 51% to 48% with more than 95% of votes counted, and Barrett conceded by phone early Wednesday, according to the Lansing City Pulse.
The mid-Michigan district, centered on Lansing, was held by Democrat Elissa Slotkin until she left it to run for Senate in 2024. Barrett won the open seat that year, and it became the most expensive House race in US history, with $66.3 million spent on ads, about $16 million more than the previous record, according to AdImpact. Lawrence said opponents "spent more against me than any House campaign in the country."
Lawrence, who beat establishment-backed Democrats in the August primary, refused corporate PAC money. His campaign says it knocked on about 250,000 doors. "We showed that you can beat an incumbent Republican in a hotly contested frontline race without taking a dime of corporate PAC money," he said. He says he will join the Congressional Progressive Caucus.
