Some of my favorite poems are from the Song Dynasty. like half of them are written by bored bureaucrats and they’re all like Stacks of paper on a desk Why I wish to go be with the foxes of the field I want to cut the magistrates throat
reading anna kerenina for the first time and at the risk of making a ridiculously facile observation it's crazy the extent to which a nineteenth century russian novel is basically just riffing on all the same bullshit we're talking about in 2026

Beaucoup de respect pour Bourdieu mais j'aurais moi aussi pu écrire que les classes sociales tendent à se reproduire si j'avais été le 7ème mec au monde à faire de la socio

There's a section in Augustine's Confessions that describes an astrologer making up a chart for the son of a rich man and the son of a slave who are both born at the same time. Despite sharing a chart which predicts success, the slave's son spends his life as a slave.

This is why you should be able to squat 150kg at least because what if a baby elephant wants to ride your back and you don't have enough strength to pick it up. Couldn't be me.

Replying to @thereriver
doctors would sometimes be called as expert witnesses to testify in freedom trials when the plaintiff's race was in dispute. in some of the frontier states they'd probably be the only locals "skilled in the natural history of the races of men," as one case put it

So that is school
We created gyms because modern day work no longer required physical activity. Without exercise, our muscles atrophy. I predict we’ll need gyms for our brains too, once AI starts doing our knowledge work.

I want an AI to wash, sort, and fold all my laundry for me
I’m a competent adult. Why do I need an “AI agent” to check into a flight for me? I’m literate. Why do I need an “AI agent” to read and write emails for me? Also, I don’t get so many emails that I can’t answer them myself. The reason “no one uses AI” is that there’s no serious utility here for the vast majority of people.
