As someone who is forever interested in life and it’s biggest mystery, the heart, I’m always amazed by the life of the late renowned legend of cardiovascular surgery Dr. Francis Robicsek. He had an array of cutting edge innovations in the field, a brilliant surgeon, a highly published academic, a teacher, a humanitarian, and yes an archeologist who in his “spare” time did heart surgery. He died at age 94 and requested to go to his final resting place wearing surgical scrubs. A true legend.

I almost forgot to tell you guys! Today is the anniversary of a fascinating moment in the history of heart surgery. On March 16, 1955, Dr. C. Walt Lillehei performed the first successful open heart operation using an animal lung (a dog's lung, in this case) as an oxygenator.
