I agree with the angry replies. It’s true that it’s terrible more and more workers are earning at or near the minimum wage. But the problem is that lots of workers need a big pay rise after a long period of stagnating real wages, not that the lowest paid are earning too much.

If you're complaining about the minimum wage increasing, you should remember that the value of the pound has fallen by a third this decade. And that doesn't account for disproportionate increases in the cost of essential goods like food, energy and housing.

OPEN LETTER: Sally Rooney is a writer, not a terrorist. Her books must be available to the public. Their withdrawal from sale, on the basis of ill-conceived and draconian anti terror legislation, is an affront to basic principles of free speech and expression so long taken for granted in this country. If we have the sensibility to dismiss one as a trashy romance novel, then why do we continue to celebrate the other as serious literature?

I know people are worried about fuel prices. And I get it. You get to the pump, watch the numbers climb, and wonder why it's costing so much more than it used to.   The reality is that global events are pushing up costs, and families here at home are feeling the impact.   But I won't accept that there's nothing I can do to help.   That's why from today, you'll be able to see petrol and diesel prices on Google Maps, compare nearby stations and find the cheapest option before you fill up.   It's a small change, but if there's a practical way to help people keep more money in their pocket, I'll do it.
