When “indie sleaze” was actually happening, it was just called indie. But as the era gets repackaged through playlists, party photos, and Pinterest boards, the Black artists who helped shape the era are being left out.
@Santigold, Spank Rock, and @kilokish shed light on the scene they experienced, the boxes the industry put them in, and how the people telling its story shape what gets remembered.

There isn't time enough, my friends—

ALT YOU WANT A SOCIAL LIFE, WITH FRIENDS You want a social life, with friends, A passionate love life and as well To work hard every day. What's true Is of these three you may have two And two can pay you dividends But never may have three. There isn't time enough, my friends— Though dawn begins, yet midnight ends— To find the time to have love, work, and friends. Michelangelo had feeling For Vittoria and the Ceiling But did he go to parties at day's end? Homer nightly went to banquets Wrote all day but had no lockets Bright with pictures of his Girl. I know one who loves and parties And has done so since his thirties But writes hardly anything at all. —KENNETH KOCH

On this day, we remember six members of the DCPS family we lost 25 years ago: students Asia Cottom, Bernard Brown, and Rodney Dickens, and teachers Hilda Taylor, James Debeuneure, and Sarah Clark.

The only thing I have to say on the 25th anniversary is what Hunter S Thompson said in the aftermath. There's been few things said more prescient than the party's over. For someone like me who partied like hell in the 90's, 21stC has been very different. The party is still over.
